12:00PM Game Summary: Crown Point defeated Newburgh again on Sunday at 12-noon by a score of 12-3, to win the Junior American Legion State Championship outright. After a scoreless second inning, Kyle Bacon led off the third with a line drive single to center. Later that inning, Tommy Parks singled in two RBIs.In the top of the fifth, Jordon Lindeman (2nd baseman) turned a double play to erase runner at second and first base. In the bottom of the fifth inning, and with Standley on first base, Parks singled to advance Standley to second. Mike Hernandez followed with a single, with Newburgh making errors, which enabled Standley & Parks to steal home.
In the sixth inning, Joe Baker walked. Kyle Bacon doubled to advance Baker to third base. Chris Samano singled to score Baker and advance Bacon to third base. Eric Clayton singled on a bad hop (error) to bring Bacon home. Parks doubled to score Samano. While Hernandez was at bat, Parks stole third base. Hernandez then singled to bring in Parks. Chris Stahlbaum singled safely, then Stahlbaum and Hernandez each stole 2nd & 3rd. Ryan Levin singled in both Hernandez and Stahlbaum. With Crown Point the designated "home team," and batting last, Parks made a double play to end the game with a caught pop-up and was then able to pick off the 1st base runner, who had too big of a lead off first base.
New IHSAA Rule May Mean End of Season: With the victory Sunday, Crown Point's American Legion Post 20 "B" team (ages 17 & under) qualified for the American Legion Junior Midwest National Tournament in Nashville, TN. However a new rule by the Indiana High School Athletic Association, which takes effect August 1, 2006, appears to bring the CP Post 20-B team season to an abrupt and premature end. The IHSAA ruling appears to state that only 5 players from a school district can be on any one organized team outside of High School.
In a July 31 letter addressed to IHSAA
commissioner Blake Ress, Crown Point resident and "baseball mom" Anova
Frasure wrote, "I feel that it is unfortunate that Indiana will not be
represented at American Legion "B" Midwest Nationals because of this
ruling. Yes, my son is on this team, and was on the Crown Point High
School JV team. I think it is unfortunate that these kids can not finish
the season that they started, especially that it is during off season for High
School Baseball. As you probably already know, this ruling takes affect the day
before the Midwest Nationals. I feel that the IHSAA has taken away our
kids' freedom to play for High School Baseball and during off season to play for
organized baseball."
