CROWN
POINT (05-15-2018)
Some days just go well for the home team.
For Crown Point, facing Class 3A No.1 Andrean, almost everything went as hoped
and the home team won a 4-1 decision in 80-degree midday Saturday sunshine out
behind Crown Point high school.
Senior Jake DeFries hit a leadoff home run to tie the game 1-1 and he scored the
go-ahead run in the third inning. And senior right-hander Ryan Bolda pitched a
complete game victory, striking out nine and walking two against an Andrean team
that is a four time state champion.
"They're a great team." said Bolda. "They're No.1 in 3A and obviously they can
compete in 4A easily. It's a big win for us."
After the 59ers scored on an RBI single by Joe Rycerz in the top of the first
inning, CP's Jake DeFries led off the bottom of the first with a home run off
losing pitcher Joel Holtcamp.
CP scored three runs in the thrid on a sacrifice fly by Jonothan Sabotnik, an
RBI-double from Alex Rich and an RBI single by Ben Fridrich.
Bolda made it hold up. The CP right-hander struck out Jake Mullens with two men
on base to end the fourth inning and he retired the last seven batter to face
him. It's been a good pitching season for the CP football quarterback.
He has three complete game victories so we wont talk about the 18-13 CP win over
Valparaiso on May 1, a very windy day when Bolda allowed 10 runs in two innings.
"That was a rough one," Ryan said after the win over Andrean. "You just brush it
off. That's baseball. It can be crazy. I know what I'm capable of and that game
was just not me. Today was more like it."
I didn't sense that either team was pointing towards this game as some kind of
landmark. Both Andrean and CP are involved in close conference races and neither
season would be defined by this game. Crown Point won Friday night 8-4 over
Munster and moved back into Duneland Athletic Conference play this week. The
59ers would go on to win two league games over Highland to clinch the
championship of the Northwest Crossroads Conference.
But when CP looks back on the 2018 season, the Bulldogs will think about the day
they beat the top-ranked 59ers and smile.
"It boosts our confidence," Bolda said. "Going into the rest of our schedule and
sectionals. It was a good day."
CP NOTES: Andrean seniors had to take college entrance exams
Saturday and some of them showed up late for the game. Mike Doolin arrived right
after the first pitch and was inserted into the lineup as a first inning pinch
hitter.
Despite the loss Saturday at Crown Point, Andrean was again ranked No.1 in Class
3A this week. Hanover Central was 14th. Lake Central (15-3) is fourth in Class
4A.
Ryan Bolda is headed for Indiana University in the fall with no plans to
continue his baseball career.
"I may try to walk (on)," said after the game with Andrean. "I haven't decided
one way or the other."
