The slick passing Trojans (14-1) raced to a 21-5 lead and rejected any and all CP comeback attempts in a 61-41 victory.
When the two teams met in the Noblesville
holiday tournament, Chesterton won 44-38 on Dec. 28. But the Trojans were not
interested in a close game on this night, shooting 58 percent from the floor and
holding CP to 16 field goals in the entire game.
“The first time we met it was at the holiday tournament,” said Trojan coach Marc
Urban. “We were all staying in the same hotel and it was the third game (of the
tournament) for both of us. And they are well-coached. They can slow you down.”
“Tonight we moved the ball a lot better and we got out to that big lead. When we
move the ball we can be pretty good.”
It appears that CP is a better team on offense when sophomore Drew Adzia has the
ball and top scorer Ty Smith is running off picks and screens. It also appears
that CP’s opponents have picked up on that. The Trojans (15-1) assigned quick
sophomore Travis Grayson to Adzia to get the ball out of his hands. Smith scored
20 for CP, but nobody else got much at all. Chesterton led 40-25 after three
quarters.
“They jumped on us right away,” said coach Clint Swan. “We could have played
better. I could have coached better. They really came to play and they beat us
in transition. We did better in the second quarter. We made a little bit of a
comeback, but you can't get behind them like that.
In the first half of the boys/girls double-header Friday, Crown Point’s Lady
Bulldogs won their second consecutive undefeated Duneland Athletic Conference
(DAC) championship with a 60-33 victory over second place Chesterton.
CP’s full court defense helped the home team steadily pull away after the game
was close in the first five minutes.
Sophomore Jessica Carrothers and Lily Stoddard split 30 points, but it was the
CP defense that decided the game. No Chesterton players scored as many as 10
points. Leading scorer Ashley Craycraft (13.8) was guarded much of the game by
CP’s Allie Govert and held to eight points. The Trojans' second-leading scorer
Emma Schmidt (10.8) finished with four points.
“It didn’t matter how many points she scored,” said CP coach Chris Seibert of
Govert. “Her job was to make it difficult for her (Craycraft). She’s very
unselfish. She does whatever she’s asked to do and she’s a willing defender.”
Seibert agreed that the Hall-of-Fame tournament was the first ‘goal’ for the
2020 Lady Bulldogs.
“But of course we wanted to win the conference. Every league game was a
challenge and to go 7-0 again is a big accomplishment.”
DOG NOTES:
Crown Point (24-0) and Portage (18-5) received quarterfinal byes in the Class 4A
Portage Sectional next week.
Crown Point will play in the first semifinal game Friday night, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m.
against the winner of the quarterfinal game between Lowell (13-7) and Chesterton
(16-4). The sectional championship is tentatively set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday
night Feb. 8.
The bye means CP will have a 10-day break between the final regular season game
against Bishop Noll (which CP won 89-52) and the first playoff game.
The winner of the Portage Sectional will face a semifinal game against the
winner of the Warsaw Sectional where Penn (22-2) is the favorite.
The Crown Point girls victory was head coach Chris Seibert’s 100th as the head
coach in Crown Point. Coaching at a public school seems like a profile in
consistent work until you get lucky.
In six seasons in Portage, Seibert had a losing record, 59-77. In five seasons
in Crown Point, the win over Chesterton produced a record of 100-27. He
suggested that he wasn’t a total loser then and he isn’t a genius now.
“I’d like to think I was just as good a coach
at Portage as I am now,” he said after the win over Chesterton Friday.
“Any coach will tell you it's all about the players, but maybe we did start
getting our share of good players (at CPHS) that maybe basketball was losing to
other sports.”
