CROWN
POINT (01-23-2016) The more you see Crown Point play big name competition,
the better they look to you.
After last Saturday’s 82-61 win over two-time small school, state champion
Bowman Academy, the Bulldogs had faced 14 teams. Only Penn (6-8), Michigan City
(7-8) and Avon (5-11) had losing records. CP (8-6) has faced 11 winning teams
including top-10 squads Griffith, Merrillville and Lawrence North.
If this is a test to see if facing better teams makes your team better, then
Crown Point is passing that test.
The Bulldogs trailed 4-3, scored 13 points in a row and never trailed again in
an up tempo battle of contrasting styles.
“Our guys came out with a great mindset offensively,” said coach Clint Swan, who
watched his team improve to 5-0 at home. “We didn't let the ball stick. We didn't
try to beat anybody off the dribble. We got a lot of good shots. That (Bowman)
is a heckuva team. They’re well coached. They are going to have an awesome team
moving forward from here.”
What Swan was referring to was the addition of 6-foot-8 wing player Brandon
Johnson, who made his Bowman debut after transferring from TF South in Lansing,
Illinois at the semistate break.
Johnson started slowly but he scored 16 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter
grabbing seven rebounds and blocking two shots in his debut. I’m not sure what
position Johnson plays. Defensively, he was inside. Offensively he was inside
and outside. What is fairly certain? CP is one of the last teams that’s going to
beat Bowman this year.
“I think he is an interior-perimeter hybrid, ‘5’ player. He can do whatever he
wants to do. He’s a heckuva player.”
Bowman attacked CP with full court defensive pressure most of the night and,
while CP finished with 19 turnovers, the Eagles’ shooting (23 of 59, 0-of-15 on
3-point attempts) could not take advantage. Bowman’s defensive style is going to
give up some points and CP was 26 of 49 (53.1%) overall and 11 of 22 from three
point range.
“Against a team like them,” said Swan. “It's not so much the guards. It's
everyone.”
Sasha Stefanovic, CP’s 6-foot-4 junior, scored 15 of his 19 in the first half.
Senior Grant Gelon got loose as the game went on, scoring 17 of his 25 points in
the second half. Those statistics hid another very strong game from senior point
guard Blake Bonin who had 10 points, eight assists and two turnovers in 29
minutes of play. Just 24 hours earlier, Bonin, a three year varsity starter,
scored seven with six assists in 27 minutes of a Duneland Athletic Conference
(DAC) win over Chesterton.
CP won two games in two nights for the second time this year, but this was their
best back-to-back sweep.
“I thought we were better this weekend than we were last weekend (a win over
Merrillville and a loss to Griffith),” said Swan. “That’s why we’re doing it. We
made positive strides today.”
DOG NOTES: Crown Point held off a late rally to top Chesterton
61-55 Friday night in the Duneland Athletic Conference (DAC) as junior Andrew
Kenneally scored 15 points in 12 minutes of play. Grant Gelon had 15 points and
seven rebounds while Sasha Stefanovic added 12 points and four assists.
CP is 2-1 in league play, one game behind first place Valparaiso (12-4, 3-0 DAC)
a team they see on Feb. 12. Six of the eight DAC teams have overall records of
.500 or better.
Senior Grant Gelon, who did not sink a three-point shot in back-to-back games
against Michigan City and Merrillville, was 9-for-22 on 3-pointers last weekend.
For the season, Gelon, who moves on to Indiana University next season, is 56 of
118 (47.4%) on three-point shots.
Crown Point hosts neighbor Boone Grove (12-1) this Saturday night, Jan. 30.
Boone won the Portage County Conference (PCC) championship last week with a
45-43 Saturday night victory over Washington Township (12-4). Boone has won 12
in a row since a season-opening 50-42 loss to Valparaiso.
