The pregame scoreboard clock counts down the minutes and seconds prior to the early season showdown between the Bulldogs and Pirates. (All photos by Mark Smith) The CP cheerleaders are probably happy that the game time temperature was 67 degrees at Merrillville and not 87 degrees like it was the first two weeks of the 2010 season. (All photos by Mark Smith)
Merrillville QB Zach Raspopovich (9) draws the defense to him and pitches out to halfback Denzel Pierce (27) on the option play Friday night (9-3-2010) against Crown Point. The press box and home stands on the west side of Demaree stadium Friday night had room for plenty of additional fans, despite the 4500 estimated attendance.
CP centre Alex Zagrocki (70) looks over the Merrillville defense on an early CP possession Friday against the Pirates. CP led 7-3, 14-10 and 21-17. Bulldogs QB Joe Hopman (12) has not thrown an interception all season. But Merrillville did stop the CP offense in the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs' Jake Lindeman (5) uses the block of Mitch Kositzky (62) to pick up yardage against the Pirates Early season games often start against a vivid backdrop of the setting sun and that was the case Friday night as Merrillville hosted neighbor Crown Point.
Crown Point's first quarter 7-0 never seemed comfortable for the Bulldogs as the Pirates would take a 10-7 halftime lead. CP QB Joe Hopman escapes the rush of Merrillville's Michael Dicken (41) and fires a pass in the sunset at Demaree Stadium Friday.
Defensive coordinator Sean Granger and head coach Chip Pettit watch their Bulldogs battle Merrillville Friday. Granger and Pettit have been worked together since Pettit coached Wheeler in 2000. Merrillville's Derek Taylor (42) rushes the passer, but CP's Joe Hopman (12) gets it away Friday night in the annual CP-Merrillville game.
The Crown Point cheerleaders maintain a positive outlook as Crown Point lead for much of the game, and seemed to dominate time of possession. Crown Point's Cody Bacon (25) tries to get away from junior linebacker Courtney Berry (23) during the DAC opener last Friday (9-3-2010) at Merrillville.
