CROWN POINT (12-15-2007) - This was probably a reverse reality check for Crown Point.  In the first half of the season, the Lady Bulldogs (5-7) have gone 0-for-6 in Duneland Athletic Conference (DAC) games.  That DAC record will hang on them until they get the first league win.

But, when they step out of league play, it
's a different story.  They play with confidence, shoot with certainty, and usually, win.  Either the DAC is too tough for them or they simply don't approach league games with a positive mental attitude.

Crown Point obviously didn't blow out 2A neighbor Hanover Central if the final score was 46-37, but they seemed sure they would, especially 5-foot-11 junior Sydnee Reeves, who scored 16 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked two shots.  The Bulldogs, leading just 20-14 at the half, outscored Hanover 15-6 in the third quarter, and it was Reeves, who has struggled to register anything in some games, posting eight points and seven rebounds in the third quarter alone.

"WE know what she can do," said CP coach Scott Reid.  "How many did she score?
16?  If she'd finish (make layups and offensive rebound shots) she'd have had 30.  What I really like was the way she rebounded at the defensive end.   We've got to have that."

HC matched up well against CP because neither team starts a true center.  But when the wing players perform like Reeves, HC is going to have a difficult time stopping that.

"We were in the game for a half," said HC coach Doug Nelson.  "But we couldn't score.  We'd get to the basket but we had no ability to finish.  Our skills overall are not quite there yet. But this was a good game for us."

Hanover has beaten Crown Point only twice in history and the last time is thought to be in the 1970s.  The Lady Cats (6-3) wanted to do more than come close and they trailed 43-27 with 3:10 left before a 10-3 run to the finish against the CP bench made the final score respectable.

Hanover may gain from not being embarrassed in this game because they have some larger schools to play. Next Saturday afternoon (Dec. 22) is HC's first-ever meeting with Andrean and Hanover will almost certainly face Griffith (10-2) in the HC Holiday tournament.  When the Lady Cats were closing the gap in the final quarter, CP coach Reid chose not to re-enter his starters, although he admitted "I was one basket away. I told the starters to get ready to go back in."

Crown Point scored a lot of points due to transition. Grabbing missed shots and running away to score.  Reeves, Tarailo and Samatha Polus, all 5-10 or 5-11 and all very mobile, were too athletic for Hanover, which has no regular taller than 5-foot-8. CP had Hanover well scouted and never went to a zone defense, which would open up HC long range shooters Jordan Kramer and Chrissy Homolka.
Hanover executed their weaving, perimeter offense against the man-to-man, designed to create one-on-one situations on the move.  The Lady Cats got those chances, but were not able to get the ball in the basket more than 13 times.

Kramer drew special attention.  A top three-point shooter, the 5-5 junior didn't get open looks at the basket against CP junior Flori Garcia.  HC's Lindsey Martinez, a tiny 5-foot-3 guard, and 5-6 Danielle Graham, a 5-6 wing player, tossed up some 'creative'  shots against the taller Bulldogs, but they could not do a lot of damage.

"They hit some of those shots," said Reid, who wanted his defense to push Kramer to her left and force her to score with the left hand over much taller defenders.  "That's her only weakness.
We just had to keep her off the foul line.  They have a nice team.  They're always going to come at us."

Crown Point gets a second shot at the DAC starting Thursday night at Portage (7-2).  The schedule gives CP no breaks.  The Hanover game was CP's fifth in nine days and they play once a week through the holiday season.

"We play every week," said Reid, who is one of many who doesn't like the DAC 14-game marathon.  "And it's Portage and Merrillville that we're playing."

DOG-CAT NOTES:  All Crown Point fans should note that Crown Point's DAC rematch with defending Sectional 2 champ Portage (7-2) will be played Thursday night, Dec. 20 with the JV game beginning at 6 p.m.

Oddly, CP is playing Portage for a second time before they meet Merrillville for the first of two head-to-head confrontations. This game was originally scheduled for Saturday night, Dec. 22 but Portage asked that it be changed and CP agreed, because frankly, it was dumb idea to schedule a varsity league game for the Saturday before Christmas when both teams had all week off.

Daniela Tarailo scored nine of her 11 points in the first half. Samantha Polus, who moved back into the starting lineup, scored all seven of their points in the first two quarters.

The inaugural four-team Hanover Central Invitational will match up Griffith and Beecher, Illinois in the first round followed by Hanover Central facing Clark.  For this first year, this will be a varsity AND junior varsity tournament so the JV teams of those four schools will meet late Friday afternoon, Dec. 28 followed by the varsity teams.  On Dec. 29, the JV consolation game will start play followed by the JV championship.  The varsity consolation game will tip off as the third game Saturday followed by the varsity championship Saturday night.

Hanover would like Crown Point to play in the HC Holiday Tournament and it might happen.  CP has played Hanover the night after they've faced Michigan City in December of the last four seasons and they don't really want that.  The problem is, again, that 14-game league schedule, which does not give CP a weekend off to potentially play a holiday tourney.   The opening night of the Hanover holiday tournament this season (Dec. 28) is the same night CP faces Merrillville.

Crown Point has a lot of its excellent freshman class in the scorebook for varsity games.  You can play five quarters a night.  Reid has included 5-9 freshman forward Madeline Moore, 5-11 freshman forward Zarah Cecich, 5-4 freshman guard Kelly Gross and 5-4 freshman guard Alle Geisen on the varsity roster just so they can get a few minutes of playing time in the fourth quarter, if the opportunity to put them in arises.  Reid praised the play of Gross, who was officially credited with three steals.  Crown Point has 11 juniors on the varsity and six freshmen on the junior varsity.
