Indians shut down Crown Point to steal 35-33 Sectional Semifinal victory

(02-03-2017) It became a game that both teams deserved to win. The reality
however, only one could. In the end, the Portage Lady Indians prevailed over the
Crown Point Lady Bulldogs 35-33 in the Class 4A Sectional 2 Semi-Final at
Chesterton High School on Friday.
Crown Point ended their season at 16-9, while Portage improved to 11-15.
For Portage, they earned the right to play Merrillville, who defeated Kankakee
Valley in the other semi-final match-up, right before the Lady Bulldogs and Lady
Despite the loss, the Bulldogs had the only two scorers to reach double-digit
figures. Junior guard Mya Scheidt had 15 points, including three first-half
three pointers, while sophomore guard Caitlyn Phillips had 10 points.
Junior guard Kaitlyn Clasen led the Lady Indians with eight points, as senior
forward Emma Havrilla and Alexis Switzer had seven points. Senior guard Kaitlyn
Shafer and junior guard Hanna Piro each had six points.
In a back and forth contest that had Portage leading 11-10 at the end of the
first and Crown Point holding a 20-19 lead at halftime, the Lady Indians
outscored the Lady Bulldogs 13-7 in the third quarter and held a five-point lead
heading into the fourth.
Out of timeout with six seconds remaining in the game, Lady Bulldogs senior
forward Sydney Taylor attempted to send the game into overtime with a baseline
jumper, but could not connect.
The Lady Bulldogs did outscore the Lady Indians 6-3 in the fourth quarter.
Dog Notes: With this defeat, the Lady Bulldogs end a five-game
winning streak against the Lady Indians. The last time Portage defeated Crown
Point was Jan. 15, 2013 58-57 in overtime. The game was played at Crown Point.
The Lady Indians head coach then was current Crown Point head coach Chris
Seibert, who coached at Portage from 2009-2015.
Until Friday, the previous time Crown Point had sought elimination in the
sectional semi-final was 2014. The Lady Bulldogs lost 72-41 to LaPorte.
Under Chris Seibert, the Lady Bulldogs have fared well. Last season, they
finished 20-6 and 16-9 this season.
