(01-04-2019) For the Crown Point Lady Bulldogs to continue their perfect
journey, they would need a test. The test came from an opponent within the
Duneland Athletic Conference, the Michigan City Lady Wolves.
In the end, the Lady Bulldogs pass the test to take sole possession of first
place in the DAC with a 51-47 win on Friday, Jan. 4 at Crown Point High School.
The victory continues Crown Point’s perfect mark at 17-0 overall, 5-0 in the
DAC. With the loss Michigan City sees their nine-game winning streak end,
falling to 12-4 overall, 4-1 in the DAC.
Taking a 15-11 lead after the first eight minutes, the Lady Bulldogs could not
do anything in the second quarter as the Lady Wolves outscored them 9-0 and took
a 20-15 halftime lead.
But Crown Point put it together in the second half as they outscored Michigan
City 36-17 in the second half.
Held to only six points in the opening half, freshman guard Jessica Carrothers
finished with 22 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs, including a perfect eight of
eight from the free-throw line.
Senior guard Caitlyn Phillips also contributed with three of the Lady Bulldogs’
five three-pointers, finishing with nine points.
Shooting from beyond the arc became key for Crown Point down the stretch as they
only hit 12.5 percent of their three-point shots in the first half. In the
second half, they went four of seven, good for 57.1 percent, while Michigan City
did not connect on anything from long distance.
Michigan City's taller lineup
commanded the boards, 31-17 in total rebounds, thereby making it all the more
important for the Lady Bulldogs to hit the outside shots.
“We talked to the kids about continuing to shoot the ball and being ready when
their number is called,” Lady Bulldogs Head Coach Chris Seibert said. “It’s nice
to play in January with a conference game on the line. This is what you play
for, to be 4-0 in the DAC coming-in and play in front of a great crowd.”
In a losing effort, the Lady Wolves received the production of senior center
Hannah Noveroske, who led her team with 20 points and 9 rebounds, while senior
forward Janicia Anderson chipped-in 12 points with 8 rebounds. Trinity Thompson
added 7 points and 7 rebounds.
The turnover margin proved a key factor as Michigan City turned the ball over 26
times to Crown Point’s 10 turnovers in the game.
LADY DOG NOTES: The 51 points scored by Crown Point against Michigan
City marked their lowest point total the season to date. They had previously
scored 52 points in victories over Warsaw and Northridge, both on Nov. 17 in the
Duneland Athletic Conference/Northern Lakes Conference Shootout.
By defeating the Lady Wolves by four points, it marked the slimmest margin of
victory for the Lady Bulldogs so far in the regular season. Before last Friday
night, they had defeated Northridge in the Duneland Athletic Conference/Northern
Lakes Conference Shootout on Nov. 17 by five points, winning 52-47.
