LaPORTE (02-09-2019) - When the Crown Point Lady Bulldogs defeated the Highland Trojans on Feb. 4 for the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s (IHSAA) Class 4A, Sectional 1 title, it became a feat they not accomplished in 18 years.

After defeating the Kankakee Valley Lady Kougars 65-49 in the IHSAA’s Regional Semi-Final on the afternoon of Saturday Feb. 9 at LaPorte High School, they returned to the same floor for the night cap and a shot at another title.

This feat had not been achieved since 1997, a regional championship.

To do that, they needed to get past the Penn Lady Kingsmen and like the Lady Bulldogs, undefeated.

The task was not easy, but came about with a hard-earned 54-47 win in overtime.

In addition to the regional title, Crown Point improves to a perfect 28-0, while Penn, who defeated Plymouth in their regional semi-final contest, end their season at 25-1.

The Lady Bulldogs now hold eight regional titles, with their first dating back to 1982.

Penn held a 15-13 advantage at halftime, but Crown Point dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Kingsmen 16-4 to take a ten-point lead.

But Penn made a solid run of their own, out-scoring the Lady Bulldogs 22-12 in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

The Lady Bulldogs stepped up to the challenge, got back on their feet, and dominated the Lady Kingsmen with a 13-6 display in the four-minute extra period.

With 19 points each, Crown Point was led by a couple of guards in senior Ellie VanDeel and freshman Jessica Carrothers.

VanDeel had a double-double with 11 rebounds.

In all, the Lady Bulldogs had 34 rebounds as freshman forward/center Lilly Stoddard had 10.

Free throws became a big key for the Lady Bulldogs in pulling to victory as they knocked down 30 of 38, with Carrothers hitting a perfect 10 of 10 and VanDeel coming-up with 13 of 18.

For Crown Point, the victory became a night of celebration and reflecting.

“We responded to some adversity, and they could have caved in, but this shows the mental toughness of this team,” said CP coach Chris Seibert. “This is a reward for my staff and all of the people that bought into what we have been doing.”

The Lady Bulldogs in all have bought into what Seibert has said.

“Coach Seibert said that if we want to win a regional, you got to beat Penn,” Carrothers said. “He also said, they are beatable if we play together.”

For Penn, sophomore guard Trinity Clinton finished with 14 points while fellow sophomore guard Grace Adams came off the bench to add 10 points.

Awaiting the Lady Bulldogs now is the Hamilton Southeastern Lady Royals. They won their regional at Kokomo, also played last Saturday by defeating Homestead 57-47.

They will meet in the semi-state round, also to be played at LaPorte High School this Saturday, Feb. 16. Tip-off is 3 p.m. (CST).

LADY DOG NOTES: The regional title won at LaPorte, marks only the second location that the Lady Bulldogs have accomplished this feat. They won seven regionals between 1982 and 1997 at Calumet High School.

The defeat of Penn marks only the fifth time that Crown Point has won games by a single digit margin. Their previous came in the regular season home finale on Jan. 23, a 66-59 win over Bishop Noll. Broadcast Note:
The next scheduled Crown Point Lady Bulldogs’ broadcast on will be Saturday, Feb. 16 when the Lady Bulldogs face the Kokomo Regional Champion, Hamilton Southeastern in the LaPorte Semistate at LaPorte High School. The pregame show starts at 2:45 p.m. and the opening tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. CST. LaPorte is also the site of the Class 1A Semistate, where Northfield (25-2) faces Marquette Catholic (25-2) at 1 p.m. EST / 12 p.m. CST.

If the Lady Bulldogs win that game, they advance to the state title game Saturday, Feb. 23 against either Castle (23-4) or Lawrence North (21-6) in the IHSAA 4A State Finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, 125 S. Pennsylvania Street, Indianapolis. Castle and Lawrence North will play in the southern Semistate Feb. 16 at Jeffersonville. and will provide coverage of the Crown Point Lady Bulldogs throughout the IHSAA Tournament.
