The Lady Bulldogs (2-1) forcing 21 turnovers highlighted one difference in the
game, Crown Point's advantage at the guard position. But CP also got a combined
27 points inside from 6-foot seniors Katie Howarth and Liz Wisniewski against
Hanover's 6-foot-2 Lisa Gac.
"I'm very proud of our girls boxing out very well," said CP coach Annie Equihua.
"Every day we're getting a little better. We had a good job in the first half.
Built up a good lead and then we let them whittle away at it here at the end."
"But we handled the ball better in the second half. They put a lot of
(defensive) pressure on us. But we handled it at the end. We're getting better."
Howarth scored seven in the first period and Crown Point (2-1) used a 10-2 run
to take a 19-9 lead on the smaller (except for Gac) Lady Cats. CP led 33-20 when
Hanover scored the final five points of the second quarter to cut the lead to
eight.
HC 5-foot-7 junior Breanna Kerley scored eight of her 14 points in the second
quarter. The lead was 37-30 with 1:28 left in the third quarter and 51-38 with
3:40 left in the game, but CP pulled away.
Hanover Central coach Doug Nelson watched a 15-point Hanover second half and
wants his team to aggressively take their offensive opportunities.
"Brooke (top scorer Brooke Sterkowitz, who scored 11) got hurt a little bit out
there and then she didn't take a lot of shots," he said. "The (defenses) are
going to beat her up a little because they know what she can do. But there's
more than one way to score and she can do it."
Lisa Gac scored 10 with eight rebounds and five blocked shots, but the Nelson
thought that more was possible there, too.
"When the defense is playing you straight, make a move and score. Either way,
she
can do it. She still had a lot of blocks. She's getting better."
Crown Point's Albrecht was not 100% healthy going into the game. But along with
new freshman guard Mya Scheidt, the Lady Bulldogs limited the turnovers (only 12
for CP) and kept Hanover (3-1) from getting a lot of breakaway steals and
baskets.
Crown Point has two new players with potential in Scheidt a 5-foot-6 point
guard and Sydney Taylor a 5-foot-10 wing player. Scheidt, a freshman, is clearly
a floor leader while Taylor, a sophomore, looks like a future double figure
scorer.
"Our two new rookies," said Equihua. "We're excited to have them."
Hanover has almost exactly the same team they had last season when they lost the
sectional semifinal to Andrean by four points.
Outside of state rated Bishop Noll, HC won't see top competition in the Greater
South Shore Conference (GSSC), so they won't have many games that are barometers
of their ability.
"We've been shooting about 30% for the season," Nelson said. "And I think we
have better shooters than that. We're 3-1. We're okay. We've got to get more of
our opportunities. We were 2 of 16 tonight and we've got to hit 30-35%. We
battled. Breanna Kerley is a battler. She got hurt and she went back in and did
what she has to do. She was our leading scorer. It's fixable. We'll be okay."
"It's good to play them," said Nelson of CP. "But this game means nothing. We
only have a couple of really big games (during the regular season). Bishop Noll
is one. And the sectional at the end of the year."
DOG/CAT NOTES: Crown Point's season-opening loss to Bishop Noll (3-0) didn't
look so bad when Noll topped East Chicago last week. The Warriors have won 20
games in each of the last two seasons.
Junior Hannah Albrecht was 12 of 13 from
the foul line in the 45-36 win over Andrean on Nov. 18.
Friday's game was watched by about 750 fans in the big Hanover gym. Even though
the schools are neighbors, no one could remember the last time CP played at
Hanover in girls basketball.
Before class basketball began in 1998, Hanover and CP were in the same sectional,
but the sectional was never played at Hanover.
Hanover guard Frankie Turturillo won't play indefinitely due to a back injury. The
5-foot-9 four-year varsity player is trying different treatments, but she could
hardly walk Friday when Crown Point was in town.
Hanover plays Lowell (2-2) in a girls-boys double-header beginning at 6 p.m.
Wednesday night Nov. 26. Crown Point begins the Duneland Athletic Conference
(DAC) season at undefeated LaPorte (3-0) Friday, Nov. 28.
