CROWN POINT (5-17-2004) - Crown Point High School's baseball team was rained out of action last Thursday and Friday (May 13-14), so the slow down gave us an opportunity to gleam some trends and analysis from the team's year-to-date pitching and batting statistics.

CROWN POINT pitching

Mike Schultz   (4-2,   1.75)  35K,  16 walks, 28 hits,     40 innings
Adam Quinn    (2-0,  3.82 ERA)  12K, 8 walks, 15 hits,   14 2/3 innings
Jimmy Wilson   (2-1,  one save, 1.35 ERA)   12K,    5 walks,  7 hits,    10 1/3 innings
Matt Jansen    (2-3,  3.91 ERA)  38Ks,  17 walks,  32 hits,  28 2/3 innings
Tommy Wise   (2-0,  one save, 3.91 ERA)  18K,  6 walks,  15 hits,   19 innings

TEAM  (12-6, 2 saves,  2.49 ERA)  115 Ks, 52 walks,  97 hits   112 2/3 innings

NOTE:
Twice as many strikeouts as walks and far more innings pitched that base hits allowed. Only 40 earned runs allowed (only 65 total) in 112 innings.
These are very, very good numbers and actually, the Bulldogs should be better than 12-6 with this pitching.

INNING BY INNING  Scoring  918 games)
CROWN POINT       31-27-28  24-30-5  7  =  152 runs (7.8 per game)
OPPONENTS          14-15-5     7-8-10  6  =    65 runs (3.6 per game)

DOG NOTES:  No power at all.  Second baseman Matt Long leads the team in HRs. What's up with that? The batting average is still a little low for a good high school team.  But the strikeout-to-walk ratio is good and 42 doubles in 152 hits indicates a lot of speed, as does 44-51 stealing bases. Only 12 sacrifices is nowhere near good enough for a non-power team. Defensively,  40 errors in 18 games is a little high but it's a lot better than it was after nine games.  Pat catcher Nick Bodinet of the back so far. Of 20 who have tried to steal, 10 have been thrown out.  The Bulldogs have outscored the opposition over 2-1 and have allowed only 36 runs ALL SEASON after the second inning.?  Clearly this team has the potential to win at better than a .667 pace.  The boys may not realize how talented this squad is. A second consecutive sectional championship is very possible. But, with so many first time varsity regulars, there is doubt of whether they can reach their potential this season.
