1. LAKE CENTRAL (12-5)
11-16-2002:
49-40 Jefferson (15-3) at Carmel

11-27-2002: 84-49 Portage (9-8)

12-3-2002: 75-29 Munster (2-16)
12-10-2002: 84-39 Kankakee Valley (7-10)

1-17-2003: 51-60 at Merrillville (12-7)
1-18-2003: 41-31 McCutcheon (9-8)
1-22-2003: 45-41 Highland (14-2)
1-28-2003: 33-37 at Valparaiso (13-6)
Lake
Central's come-from-behind win over Highland was a confidence builder over a
team that had defeated them three years in a row. But Highland is not that
strong. LC still has CP (11-7) and undefeated East Chicago (17-0) left to play
and those two will be a better barometer. LC is 48-of-62 in
foul shooting in the last three games.
2. Valparaiso (11-6)
11-13-2002:
36-41 at East Chicago (12-0)

Warsaw Holiday Tournament
12-28-2002:
40-50 Warsaw (12-1)
12-28-2002: 42-48 (South Bend) St. Joseph's (10-2)
1-10-2003:
66-31 at LaPorte (3-10
1-14-2003: 62-26 Munster (2-16)
1-18-2003:
62-29 Hobart (8-10)
1-24-2003: 65-43 at Portage (9-8)
1-25-2003: 68-35 at Elkhart Central (0-19)
1-28-2003: 37-33 Lake Central (12-5)
Valpo has won nine of their last 12 and they appear to be charging. Katie Ramirez has jumped into the starting lineup and averaged 7.3 ppg. over her last three games. 6-2 sophomore Lindsay Humes has averaged 12.5 over her last four games.
3. Gary West
Side (13-3)
11-20-2002: 63-60 (OT) Chesterton

McCutcheon Shootout Tournament
1-3-2003:
55-64 Jefferson (13-3)
1-4-2003: 55-31 (West Lafayette) (11-3)
1-4-2003: 40-30 Chesterton (10-9) 5th place
1-9-2003:
43-45 East Chicago (17-0)
1-14-2003: 86-54 at Wirt (7-7)
1-22-2003: 73-43 Lew Wallace (4-9)
West
Side doesn't really have the tough finish schedule of some of the other top
teams. They should go 18-3 and start gearing up for East Chicago again. The
Cougars big date is Monday when the state tournament draw comes out.
4.
Highland (14-2)
11-22-2002:
56-40 Munster (2-16)
11-23-2002:
56-43 at Portage (9-8)
11-29-2002: 54-39 at Merrillville (12-7)
12-5-2002: 46-24 at Lowell (9-7)
12-6-2002: 44-40 South Bend Riley (12-3) at the Hammond Civic
Center
12-10-2002: 55-25 Hobart (8-10)
12-13-2002: 54-43 at Griffith (11-5)
12-20-2002: 64-24 Gavit (8-9)
12-21-2002: 42-20 Andrean (11-7)
1-3-2003: 39-47 Crown Point
(11-7)
1-4-2003: 46-38 at Penn (7-7)
1-9-2003: 58-15 Bishop Noll (5-12)
1-15-2003:
43-36 Chesterton (10-9)
1-20-2003: 55-60 at (Elmhurst, Ill) York (20-1)
1-22-2003: 41-45 at Lake Central (12-5)
1-25-2003: 56-27 at Munster (2-16)
Highland is spoiled. They were surprised by two losses to schools twice their size. Highland is supposed to lose to Lake Central. They just hadn't for a few years. Lyndee Arnold scored a career-high 18 against Munster and the Trojans did hit 10 of 15 from the line, which is great for them. A big test Saturday against Jefferson (13-3).
11-15-2002:
74-19 Hebron (6-12)
11-16-2002:
40-47 at Andrean (11-7)
11-22-2002: 55-30 Kankakee Valley (7-10)
11-23-2002: 52-30 at Munster (2-16)
11-29-2002: 42-46 Warsaw (17-1)
12-3-2002: 53-34 Lowell (9-8)
12-6-2002: 47-28 at Portage (9-8)
12-13-2002: 50-43 Merrillville (11-7)
12-14-2002: 54-49 at Boone Grove (16-3)
12-21-2002: 41-44 at Valparaiso (11-6)
1-4-2003: 39-47 at Highland
(14-2)
1-4-2003: 62-22 at Hanover Central (6-11)
1-11-2003: 46-44 Michigan City (4-11)
1-18-2003: 42-30 Chesterton (10-9)
1-24-2003:
68-32 at LaPorte (3-14)
1-25-2003: 41-43 Bishop Luers (15-4)
Crown
Point led 32-27 going to the fourth quarter but they couldn't hold it against
Luers. The Bulldogs have lost all seven games by 10 points or less.
Cassie Pruzin leads NW Indiana with 113 steals in 18 games (6.2) and also has 77
(4.2) assists on a low-scoring team.
6. East Chicago (17-0)
11-13-2002:
41-36 Valparaiso (11-6)
11-16-2002: 65-52 (SB) Clay (10-7)
11-20-2002: 45-42 (SB) Riley (15-3)
11-22-2002:
39-27 at Maine West (Palatine, Ill.) (13-6)
11-27-2002: 56-41 Merrillville (11-7)
12-3-2002: 100-18 Gary Roosevelt (0-11)
12-10-2002: 70-37 Hammond (10-5)
12-14-2002: 58-54 at (Harvey, Ill. ) Thornton (11-8)
LaPorte Holiday Tournament
12-28-2002:
38-19 Michigan City (4-12)
12-28-2002: 42-39 (South Bend) Adams (12-5)
1-9-2003:
45-43 Gary West Side (14-3)
1-11-2003: 57-30 Bishop Noll (5-12)
1-16-2003:
54-30 Morton (6-10)
1-18-2003: 46-40 South Bend Adams (12-4)
1-20-2003:
53-36 (Chicago) Simeon (5-12) at South Suburban College
1-21-2003: 47-43 at Hobart (8-10)
1-25-2003: 43-32 Arsenal Tech (5-12)
How
on earth is this team continuing to win? The Cardinals were 11-of-30
from the foul line against Hobart and 7 of 19 from the line against Simeon. The
Cardinals were shut out in the opening quarter against Arsenal Tech. This is one
of the weakest 4A undefeated teams I've seen since class basketball began in
1997.
7. Merrillville (12-7)
11-16-2002:
62-67 (2 OTs) at Wheeler (13-6)
11-22-2002: 62-45 Logansport (3-15)
11-27-2002: 41-56 at East Chicago (17-0)
11-29-2002: 39-54 Highland (14-2)
12-7-2003: 53-29 Michigan City (4-11)
12-13-2002: 44-50 at Crown Point (11-7)
12-14-2002: 54-65 at Benton Central (12-2)
12-17-2002: 51-39 Munster (2-16)
12-21-2002: 66-46 LaPorte (3-13)
12-28-2002: 45-27 Lowell (9-8)
(SB)
Riley Tournament
1-2-2003:
53-36 Elkhart Central (0-19)
1-3-2003: 52-71 at (SB) Riley (15-3)
1-3-2003: 56-54 (OT) Rochester (15-2), 5th place
1-7-2003:
42-23 at Griffith (12-6)
1-10-2003: 41-39 at Hobart (8-10)
1-17-2003:
60-51 Lake Central (12-5)
1-18-2003: 48-43 Portage (9-8)
1-24-2003: 56-58 at Chesterton (10-9)
1-28-2003: 65-47 at Andrean (11-7)
Merrillville
can be excused for the loss to Chesterton as the Trojans hit an uncharacteristic
nine three-point goals. New center Brittany Moore got 16 rebounds against
Chesterton. This is still a strong team but the worry is they may have peaked.
They need a bye in the state tourney. They can't win three games in five
days.
8.
Chesterton (10-9)
11-16-2002:
57-39 Munster (2-16)
11-20-2002:
60-63 (OT) Gary West Side (13-3)
11-22-2002: 38-48 Lake Central (11-4)
11-27-2002: 46-42 at New Prairie (7-7)

1-10-2003:
49-40 Portage (9-8)
1-11-2003: 48-36 Jefferson (12-3)
1-15-2003:
36-43 at Highland (13-1)
1-18-2003: 30-42 at Crown Point (11-7)
1-24-2003: 58-56 Merrillville (12-7)
Remember
back at the start of the year when some said Chesterton would win the DAC?
This was a big win. Kate Cartwright hit five three-pointers in the win over
Merrillville and if they could always shoot like that, they'd go to the state
finals.
9. ANDREAN (11-7)
11-16-2002:
47-40 Crown Point (10-6)
11-23-2002:

1-10-2003: 54-30 at Morton (5-10)
1-17-2003:
42-51 at Portage (9-8)
1-18-2003: 46-29 Griffith (12-5)
1-23-2003: 42-35 at Lowell (9-8)
1-25-2003: 45-40 at Hammond Gavit (7-9)
1-28-2003: 47-65 Merrillville (12-7)
The 59ers rose to the occasion against slumping Griffith. Lisa Moody hit a career high 11 but she may be out for the season with a leg injury.
11-15-2002:
62-72 at North Newton (14-3)
11-16-2002: 32-21 BISHOP NOLL (5-12)
11-22-2002: 43-56 at Andrean (11-7)
11-27-2002: 34-49 Hanover Central (6-11)

12-20-2002: 43-38 WHITING (10-8)
Carroll
Invitational (Flora, IN)
12-21-2002:
35-24 Rossville (5-11)
12-21-2002: 40-29 Carroll (4-13)
12-28-2002: 27-45 at Merrillville
(12-7)
1-4-2003: 41-30 Kankakee Valley (7-10)
1-11-2003: 43-45 at HAMMOND (10-6)
1-14-2003: 41-28 GRIFFITH (12-5)
1-18-2003: 38-30 at Gavit (8-9)
Lowell has held their last nine foes to 45 points or less but the Devils have lost four in a row to Andrean. This team needs a long ride in the LAC tournament so they can be ready to face LC, EC or West Side in the sectional.
SMALL SCHOOLS
1. North Newton (16-3)
11-16-2002:
72-62 Lowell (9-8)

1-21-2003: 59-37 at West Central (8-8)
1-23-2003: 60-41 South Newton (8-7)
1-28-2003: 76-57 at Twin Lakes (8-10)
Has Holly Martin lost her mind? The 5-7 junior, not a big scorer before the first of the year, scored 16 in the 'Civil War' win over South Newton. Martin has averaged 17.3 in their last three games. This is a team to watch. After beating North Judson for the first time in 24 years, North Newton may be born-again.
2. BOONE GROVE (16-3)
11-12-2002:
58-28 at River Forest (5-11)
11-15-2002: 45-34 at Calumet (12-5)

1-20-2003: 63-61 Washington Township (11-5)
quarterfinals
1-24-2003:
80-33 LaCrosse (6-10) semifinals
1-25-2003: 57-55 Wheeler (13-6) championship
Boone won the PCC for the first time since 1996
with the come-from-behind win over Wheeler. After making 16-of-20 from the line
against LaCrosse, Boone made only 12 of 31 against Wheeler. The Wolves
were shaky in the three-game tourney. They'll go after a school-record 18th win
Feb. 6 at North Judson (11-6).
3. North Judson (10-6)
11-23-2002:
87-73 over Twin Lakes (8-10)
11-29-2002:
71-67 at Bremen (11-7)
11-29-2002: 82-40 at Kouts (3-14)
12-3-2002: 55-43 at North White (5-10)
12-6-2002: 45-54 at Plymouth (9-6)

12-21-2002: 63-56 Triton (12-4)
12-28-2002: 43-38 Tippecanoe Valley (15-2)
1-4-2003: 61-50 John Glenn (8-7)
1-8-2003:
61-74 at Rochester (16-2)
1-11-2003: 73-41 at Kankakee Valley (7-10)
1-16-2003:
52-64 at North Newton (14-3)
1-18-2003: 47-54 Benton Central (13-3)
1-22-3: 62-57 Winamac (13-4)
The
win over rival Winamac is significant because that's a sectional rival. The game
with Boone (16-3) next week is also a welcome test. North Judson is
playing big winning teams down the stretch and that will pay off in the
sectional when they get to line up against some losers.
4.
Washington Township (11-5)
11-16-2002:
46-52 at Portage (9-8)
11-20-2002: 52-61 Calumet (12-5)
11-22-2002: 68-31 at Hebron (6-12)
11-23-2002: 70-24 at (MC) Marquette (0-15)

67-19 Kouts (3-14)
Porter
County Conference (PCC) Tournament
1-20-2003:
61-63 Boone Grove (16-3)
The
down side of losing in the quarterfinals (other than the obvious) of the PCC
tournament is that you have to sit out the rest of the week. There are no
consolation games. But WT played 13 games in two months to start the year and
they may have needed the rest. Christi Gladdis is 32 nd all-time in Porter
County scoring. WT had five players in double figures against Boone, an

Culver
is a 1A school and they shouldn't beat 3A teams New Prairie and Bremen to win
this mismatched tournament. Stacy Stevens is averaging 27.8 over her last
10 games and
30.6 over her last three games. Culver still looks like a regional team.
JANUARY NOTES: The state tournament draw comes up Monday, Feb. 3. No. 1 Kokomo (17-0) closes the season at North Central (14-4). Unbeaten EC (17-0) closes the season at Lake Central (12-5). Unbeaten Angola (19-0) will finish the regular season at 22-0 but their schedule is very soft.
The Lake Athletic Conference (LAC) tournament seeded Calumet (12-5) ahead of Highland (14-2). It defeats the purpose of seeding if you don't take it seriously.
Boone Grove drew 2,000 fans twice Saturday
for the PCC semifinals and finals.
