CROWN POINT (4-13-2006)  Crown Point was looking to possibly go over the .500 mark for the season on a rare 80-degree April afternoon, but Chesterton jumped to a quick 4-0, 1st-inning lead on a two-run single by Ashley Scherer, and never looked back en route to a 9-2 win over the host Lady Bulldogs Thursday at Crown Point High School.  With the win, Chesterton remained unbeaten in the Duneland Athletic Conference and improved their record to 8-1 overall.

Erika Malloy, a junior, suffered her first loss as a pitcher in the young season, giving up 7 hits and was responsible for 6 runs.  Freshman Kelsey Rather was effective in relief, shutting down the Lady Trojans in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Rather racked up four strikeouts in the stretch until the 7th inning when a couple of Lady Bulldog errors and Chesterton's bunting offense produced three more runs to account for the final 9-2 score.

Crown Point put together their best threat in the bottom of the fourth inning, when they trailed the Trojans 6-0.  Junior Anna Stephens singled and advanced to second with a stolen base.  Freshman Jessica Martinez then singled, and the two runners both advanced a base before Amy Fairchild struck out.  Senior Lauren Stoval then drew a walk to load the bases before senior Alicia Rock hit a smashing double into right center field to drive in Stephens and Martinez.

But the Bulldogs stranded Stovall and Rock at 3rd and 2nd bases as the next two batters went down, with a strikeout and a harmless pop-up to the pitcher.

CP SOFTBALL NOTES:  The Lady Bulldogs went with the freshman Kelsey Rather again on Saturday at Lowell, going the distance in a 2-1, 10-inning loss to the Lady Devils.  Anna Stephens was 2 for 5 at the plate and Allison Adank went 2 for 4 for the Bulldogs, who dropped to 4-6 on the year.  Lowell upped their record to 8-2 behind the hitting of Katherine Allert who went 3 for 5, including driving in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.  Kelly Johnson went 3 for 4 and had a triple for the Red Devils.

The Lady Bulldogs begin a three game home stand Monday, April 17 with Valparaiso, Wednesday with LaPorte and Friday with Merrillville before boarding bus for a double header scheduled for Saturday, April 22 in Logansport.

USA-365.com will provide live Internet Radio coverage of the Merrillville-Crown Point girls softball game Friday, April 21 with the pregame show starting at 4:15 p.m., CDT.  Dave Woodworth and Mark Smith are scheduled to provide the play-by-play.
