HEBRON (12-2-2011)
I'm sure Hanover Central expected to have a winning record this season, but I don't
know if they expected to win many games like they did last week.
Following a 63-26 Tuesday night win over Calumet three nights earlier, the Lady
Cats rolled by Hebron 58-27 in the first game of last Friday's girls/boys
homecoming double-header in the Hawk gym.
Junior guard Blayr Poston scored 20 and sophomore center Kristin Roper grabbed
11 rebounds as Hanover (5-0) jumped to a 14-2 lead never trailed on a night when
Hebron wasn't able to put up much of a challenge.
"I thought Blayr played her best game," said HC coach Doug Nelson.
"She ran the offense and handled the ball well the whole time she was in there.
And Roper is just a beast on the boards."
Poston scored 10 in each half, while Roper had seven of her 11 rebounds after
halftime to go with 10 points and five assists.
Beginning a pre-Christmas slice of the schedule where they should do well, Hanover was strong offensively, getting layups early against the mistake-prone Hawks who committed 13 first half turnovers.
Hanover did a good job of breaking down Hebron's attempts at defense, with a weaving pick-setting attack that often opened the foul lane for uncontested layups. Even the 'center' 5-foot-7 put the ball on the floor and dribbled in for two points.
"It's just an open post offense," said Nelson. "No one wants to guard that offense for more than four or five times. Or somebody opens up outside and we kick it out. I'm happy."
Nelson tried to run this offense when he first came to Hanover and he had a very small team, led by all-area guard Jordan Kramer. The Cats did win some and were sectional champs, but they never ran it as well as Hanover did last week.
"I don't think that team had as many weapons as this one does," said the coach.
"I told them before the Calumet game and that I've just got a feeling we can do
better than this. And we have. We made very few turnovers in the first half
tonight."
Hanover rotated 10 players in the game and got a season-best seven points off
the bench from junior forward Danielle Schwalm. HC committed 14 second half
turnovers or the margin of victory would have been larger.
LADY CAT NOTES: Hanover Central will play Bishop Noll in
Hanover's Winter Classic Holiday tournament on Dec. 28 and, if they win, they
will probably play 1A No.3 Oregon-Davis (4-1) that same night. It will be the
first-ever official meeting between the two schools, but not truly the first
time they've played.
"They were here in our gym all summer," said coach Doug Nelson. "They were in our summer tournament. They're all 5-9, 5-8 and they all run the floor."
The draw for the eight team tournament was a 'secret' but Nelson admitted, 'We weren't going to match up Oregon-Davis and (2A No. 10) Bowman Academy in the first round."
The last time Hanover won five in a row was in December of 2000. The Lady Cats finished 14-8 in the 2000-2001 season.
