HEBRON (12-2-2005) - These
boys-girls homecoming double-headers that non-football schools hold during the
basketball season are usually a lot of fun for the home school. Friday
night's Hebron home coming was more fun than usual. For Hebron.
In match ups that all four teams thought could go either way by almost any
margin, Hebron's girls rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to pull away
from Hanover's Lady Cats 57-41 and Hebron's boys took off from a nine-point
halftime lead and just ran away from Hanover 86-56. And a good time was
had by all. At least by everyone who didn't arrive by bus.
"It was just one of those games," said HC girls coach Chris York, who watched his team drop to 1-3 after the Porter County Conference (PCC) opener. "Anybody who shot the ball for us in the second half couldn't hit. It doesn't make any sense for us to look as good as we did in the first half and as bad in the second."
Hanover got six rebounds and six points from 5-8 junior Anna Turturillo as the Lady Cats jumped to a 12-6 first quarter lead and the backcourt duo of senior Krysta Rickey and freshman Jordan Kramer combined for 11 second quarter points as HC expanded the edge to 31-22 after two quarters.
It was 35-28 with 5:12 left in the third quarter before the HC offense unexpectedly shut down. Over the next 8 1/2 minutes, the Hawks (2-6), who suffered through a difficult November schedule, ran off 17 points in a row to totally reverse the game. Hanover could not convert on any offensive opportunities and seemed to take panic shots as the game slipped away. Defensively, they could not prevent the larger Hawks from forcing the ball in closer to the basket and getting easy shots.
With four returning starters off last year's team, three of them seniors, the Hawks couldn't shoot very well from the floor either. But Hebron played with a sense of urgency, got second shots and free throws, sinking 13 of 16 from the line in the final quarter.
"We
scouted them the other night and they couldn't hit anything," said York,
who has only three seniors and three juniors on the roster.
"We just need to find confidence. Our people are shooting the ball and
saying, 'Gee, I sure hope it goes in.'"
Hebron's boys had no trouble getting shots to go in, largely because they got easy ones. The Hawks (2-1), who have six returning senior regulars, stole the ball from Hanover so often you wanted to call the police.
Lead guard Caleb Biggs, a renowned shooter, played a very patient game against the HC double-team trapping defense, taking just 10 shots and making seven, setting up teammates with seven assists. It's hard to tell how good a shooter Rob Bramlet (15 second half points) is because all he got was layups.
"We got beat the other night (68-46) at Wheeler," said Hebron coach Mike DeFries. "But we learned a lot in that game and we're not going to see another team with that size."
"We wanted to double-team (HC leading scorer Eric) Gross wherever he went," added DeFries. "Caleb had a very good game. He was 7-of-10. The other night, he was 2-of-10. We're going to run into a lot of box-and-one."
"We've got seven seniors. This is a year we've been waiting for. Biggs has been playing since he was a freshman and so has Luchene. They've been starting since they were sophomores. We want to win conference. We were 5-2 last year. But we want to win the sectional. We beat Kouts last year (56-55) at the sectional when they were 18-4 and then we lost to Morgan Township (61-57 in OT), after we'd beaten them twice during the regular season. We had shots at the end and of regulation and we should have won."
"On the first play of overtime, Luchene blows out his knee. They had to carry him off the floor. He was done. This year we've got the sectional here. So that's our No. 1 goal. We're 2-0 in the league. That's a goal to beat Wheeler, but they're a big 2A school with a lot of kids from Valpo and Portage. We're not going to see anybody like them in our league or at our sectional."
Hanover came in at 2-0 and, like the HC girls team, did very little right after halftime. HC gave up an outrageous 31 third quarter points as the home team built a 20-point lead in front of about 750 fans on a cold December night. When HC lead guard Mark Myszkowski picked up his third and fourth fouls in the first four minutes of the third period and had to go to the bench, the Hawks picked up the attack, stealing the ball and scoring on runaway baskets on their shiny new home floor.
Hanover's only bright spots were Charlie Huffnagle, who played with a bandage covering a broken left hand and scored six points plus freshman Jordan Rizo, who posted 11 of his 13 points in the second half.
"They did a nice job of keeping us on one side of the floor," said HC coach Dave Uran. "But we can't fall apart like that. These boys will remember this feeling. We were 2-0 and maybe we were a little overconfident."
"Our defensive rebounding was pathetic," added Uran. I thought we must have had 30 turnovers. We were like a rookie quarterback who locks in on an open receiver and gets intercepted. We've got to fake with the ball. But we'll put the wheels back on and get ready for Washington Township (Dec. 9). You've got to learn how to lose. It's a long ride home."
HC-HEBRON NOTES: Hanover's girls may have deserved a better fate. Game officials were lenient on traveling calls, which hurt the effectiveness of HC's full court press. But the Lady Cats missed at least a half dozen layups on plays where Jordan Kramer or Krysta Rickey would drive into the lane and pass off. Anna Turturillo, HC's leading scorer, missed several shots she usually makes.
Hebron's new gym has a much larger upper deck than the old one, which is still in use at the old school, and now serves the next door junior high. There is much more locker room and hallway space in the new school, but there is one flaw in the gym. No benches. Players and coaches actually sit in the first row of the bleachers. It is something that is correctable. The Hawks might also consider putting the band upstairs. It would be more comfortable for all concerned.
Hebron coach Mike DeFries likes the Porter County basketball tournaments that dot his schedule.
"We've
got a good schedule," he said. "Some teams just play 20 games.
We've got our homecoming every year. Then we have the South County
(Hebron, Morgan Township, Kouts and Boone) and then we have the county (PCC
championship) tournament. And we play Boone and South Central at the
end."
Hebron plays Boone Grove in the semifinals of the South County Tournament on
Dec. 29 at Hebron. Hanover faces Calumet, Wheeler and Hobart in the
Wheeler Invitational starting on Dec. 28. That pairing has not yet been
announced.
HC girls coach Chris York will take his team to the eight-team Momence
Invitational and he reports that the home team is favored.
"They have a 5-10 girl that some Division I schools are looking at."
Hebron girls forward Molly Marshall is the sister of boys forward Mike Marshall, who is the cousin of varsity basketball brothers Ryne and Aaron Marshall. All are related to former Hawk Jennifer Marshall who played on coach Jerry Bechtold's 2002 state finals team.
