Youth Prevails in Sycamores' 75-48 Win over Missouri Southern

TERRE HAUTE, IN (11-04-2006) — Led by strong guard play, the Indiana State Sycamores cruised to a 75-48 win over the Missouri Southern State Lions in men’s basketball exhibition action at the Hulman Center Saturday night.

ISU was led by junior Gabe Moore and freshman Cole Holmstrom each with 14 points. The duo would also tally three assists a piece with Holmstrom filling out the box score with a team-high three steals. The guards were joined by freshman Marico Stinson in double-figures with 10 points on the night.

“Across the board, all of the new comers really stepped up” senior Trent Wurtz said of the team that returned only seven letter winners from 2006.

Newcomer Todd McCoy scored Indiana State’s first points of the game with a three-point bucket and the Sycamores would never look back. ISU stormed to a 13 point lead early in the half and built the lead to as much as 19 over the first 20 minutes of the game.

The Sycamores would capitalize on free throws in the first half, hitting 13 of 15 in a trend that would continue over the final half of the game, banking 23 points on 34 opportunities from the charity stripe.

Following the break, Indiana State would get out to another quick start, stringing together a 14-4 run over the first five minutes of the half as they built a 29 point advantage.

With the large lead, head coach Royce Waltman finished the final ten minutes of the game with three freshman and two walk-ons on the floor. Freshmen Norman Wells and Harry Marshall brought the crowd to its feet on three thunderous dunks in the waning moments of the half.

“All of the guys played hard tonight,” Waltman said of his team’s effort. “We got a chance to play a lot of guys and see who can compete.”
