MUNSTER (7-11-2010) -
There was a banner at the top of the screen at
the Munster Little League that listed the 14 members of the 2008 Little
League age-10 Munster all-stars who finished second in the state of Indiana.
Seven of those names were also on the backs of
Munster uniforms Sunday night as the 2010 12-year-old all-star playoffs
began. When you play a good team at the start of a tournament, you
hope they aren't quite up to the moment. That wasn't the case Sunday.
There were a couple of situations Sunday where Lowell could have grabbed an
inning or two. But Munster was the better team and both sides left
knowing that fact. The future Mustangs scored eight times in the
second inning and launched a total of seven home runs in six innings,
winning 19-2 over Lowell.
It wasn't the end of the world. It was the first of five pool play
games to be played by the Lowell 12s this week and they are unlikely to see
a tougher foe.
"There's nothing we can do about this one," said manager Roland Thomas. "If we win the next four games, we will advance to the district finals. So that's what we've got to concentrate on."
The final score was a little bit of a jolt. Lowell had a good number of fans make the trip to Munster on a Sunday night and when both teams went scoreless in the first inning, it seemed like a close game was in order.
But Munster's Andrew Jumonville doubled to lead of the second inning and Alex Mis singled him home against Lowell starting pitcher Charlie Betts. The next batter, Grant Rodemacher, hit a ground ball to the pitcher Betts. The Lowell right-hander looked at the runner to keep him from advancing, but then threw the ball past first base. Betts struck out Jacob Lyza but he walked the eighth and ninth place hitters to force in a run and make it 2-0. Munster leadoff man Chase Dawson then doubled home two more runs and Nick Gauthier hit a three-run homer to make it 7-0.
Munster would hit six more homers to the delight
of the home fans, but the game was over in that second inning.
"That one inning killed us," Thomas said. "We let our heads get down
and when we do that, we don't play well."
The final score is a little deceptive. The scorer was 8-1 after four
innings and 10-1 after five innings. Munster sent 13 batters to the
plate and scored nine times in the sixth.
Munster right-hander Conner Manous struck out seven in three innings,
allowing just two singles. Lowell has some history against the Munster
pitcher.
"He's like Kryptonite to some of our guys," said Thomas. "They don't
think they can hit him. But we've got to win four in a row and get
another shot at them. We can do it."
LITTLE NOTES: It was a bad night for Lowell and Lowell
fans, who brought small signs with every players' name plus noisemakers to
use when the boys did well.
After another in a seemingly endless series of
85-90 degree days, the Munster Little League was very mosquito-friendly.
In the sixth-inning a light rain began to fall.
There are six teams in Lowell's pool and everyone plays everyone else.
The top two teams advance to the District finals next week, also in Munster.
The district champ goes directly to the new 14-team state finals. In the past, there were sectional playoff series, which chopped the state finals field down to eight. Now, it's easier to get to the finals, but tougher to win once you get there.
