ROSELAWN (7-18-2009) When you sweep the winner's bracket in a double elimination tournament, any
challenger's got to be a lot better than you are to come back and win.
Lowell averaged 10 runs a game over five games in the District Junior Little
League playoffs. They might have been the better team overall. But Hebron's
14s got the pitching when they needed it most and turned back Lowell 11-6
Saturday afternoon to earn a berth in the 2009 Junior Little League
(14-and-under) state finals.
Hebron (3-1) scored five runs in the first two innings including four
unearned runs and Lowell's high-scoring attack never could get even in a
game that was very similar to Hebron's 11-8 win over Lowell in the winner's
bracket championship game three days earlier.
"Our pitching is right there with anybody," said Hebron coach Sam Wallace. "We don't go especially deep with it. But what we have is quality."
The pitching got Hebron through. Their defense was shaky and the offense was a little inconsistent, but pitchers Jeremy Briggs and Kyle Joyce got outs when they needed to to end Lowell's all-star season.
Lowell scored six runs in the first inning and beat Hebron 9-4 in the first game of the championship round on a day when they had to beat Hebron twice to advance. But in the second game, an infield error and back-to-back doubles by Briggs and Billy Weaver gave Hebron a 2-0- lead after one inning.
In the second, an error by Lowell shortstop Luke Ison led to a three-run inning as Hebron's Jon Maneta stroked a two-run single off Lowell starting pitchers Dillon Cohs.
Hebron scored two more unearned runs inside a three-run third inning and Hebron led 8-0 just 30 minutes into the game. Lowell rallied when an RBI hit by Ryan Blankenberg keyed a three-run third inning. But RBI hits by Briggs and Sheets keyed a three-run Hebron fourth inning that made the score 11-3.
Lowell (4-2) closed the gap again in the fifth when Josh Degrauwe smacked a two-run single to left field and a throwing error from Hebron catcher Jon Maneta donated another run. But Joyce, a hard-throwing right-hander, got key outs in the sixth and seventh to keep the game from getting truly close.
What Lowell didn't have was a player like Briggs, a curve ball pitcher and line drive hitter who was 5-for-8 and was on base 11 times in three games against Lowell. Briggs, who will attend Andean, pitched just three innings in the deciding game, leaving with an 11-2 lead.
"I thought they were catching up to him," said Wallace. "Lowell's a very good hitting team and they caught up to him the first time we played (an 11-8 win on July 15). Kyle came in and he gives them a different look."
Another reason for removing Briggs after three innings may have been the pitch count. You have a limit of 95 pitches in a Junior Little League game. But you can move to another position and then come back later to pitch. Briggs, who gave up just two singles, had thrown 46 pitches after three innings. He could have come back to pitch if he was needed in the sixth or seventh, but he wasn't. Joyce was able to pitch out of trouble consistently.
"I don't know if we had any intensity in the first game," admitted Wallace. "It was like we knew we had the extra game if we needed it. Not that we wanted to play an extra game but there was no urgency."
Lowell's defense cost them the title here, and while they don't appear to have any great players in this group, Lowell's high school baseball program should find depth here. Jake Fontanez, a left-handed hitting outfielder and pitcher, appears to be a natural leadoff batter. Catcher Bryan Thomas was 5-for-11 in the three games batting in the third slot. Spencer Kersey and Dillon Cohs are first basemen and pitchers who should help the high school the next four seasons and the Senior Little League the next two.
Hebron gets over a week to get ready for the finals where they will have to be a better defensive team. Traditionally, the District II champ is a little overmatched when they reach the state level. But Briggs, Kyle Joyce, lefty Billy Weaver and Spencer Sheets are a pitching foursome that gives the Hebron 14s an outside shot to win at least a couple of games.
"We're thinking a good showing would be winning it all," said manager Mike Rieck in the fever of the post-game celebration. "We're going the to win it all and we can't look at it any other way."
LITTLE NOTES: Hebron's victory is impressive due to the size of the Hebron Little League. There are only 15 junior Little League players in the entire Hebron Little League. They have 24, 12-and-under players and 36 in the 12-and-under bracket.
Hebron is not in the Senior Little League all-star playoffs. They did not have the numbers to field a team. When you ask about the Hebron Little League, they repeatedly assume you mean the girls softball program, which has won four district titles in four years. Hebron boys baseball needed this win.
Saturday's championship double-header took five hours, but with temperatures in the upper 60s, the conditions were not a factor in any way.
Lowell won Saturday's first game 9-4 as Jake Fontanez had three base hits while Dylan Cohs and Luke Ison both had two RBI hits. Lowell scored six unearned runs in the first inning after Hebron's infield misplayed three of the first four ground balls.
Since Junior Little Leaguers are weeks away (the 14 year-old area) from entering high school, Hebron's tourney win theoretically speaks well of Hebron's varsity baseball future. But it may not work that way in this case. Hebron 14s pitcher and shortstop Jeremy Briggs, easily the best player in the tournament, isn't going to Hebron. He's reportedly going to enroll at Andrean.
First baseman and left-handed pitcher Billy Weaver also may not attend Andrean. He's headed to a private Christian school. Kyle Joyce, a quality shortstop and pitcher and catcher Jon Maneta could contribute in a year or two and others could grow physically and surprise. But the heart of the Hebron squad isn't going to put on Hawk uniforms.
With that said, Hebron's Little League as a whole had a very good year. The Hebron 12s were 2-3 in pool play at Munster and were competitive. The 10s were 3-2 and reached the District II semifinals at Whiting.
A consensus is that Hebron formerly had players in T-ball (where batters do not face pitching) for three years and that, plus the size of the Hebron Little League, retarded their development.
The entire nine-game tourney went off without one rain delay at the wide open Roselawn Little League near the corner or Route 10 and Route 55. The junior and senior (16 and under) Little League tournaments traditionally had been held at Lowell because the Lowell Little League field has lights for night play.
But the Roselawn Little League, by general consensus, was a very good host and slices of free cake to everybody during the second game Saturday didn't hurt. The Senior Little League playoffs began Sunday in Cedar Lake and one of those two tourneys (junior or senior) will probably go back to Lowell in 2010.
