EAST
CHICAGO (11-26-2011) After losing at Hanover Central the night before
Thanksgiving, Lowell needed a win badly. Even the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
Even on the road against an undefeated team."Don't blame anyone else for how you play. You control that yourself. Needles to say, yesterday's practice was somewhat of a tough practice. I thought we'd come ready to play today."
EC (4-1) had won four games against losing teams, but this game showed they are sectional contenders. Moore has to be double-teamed in the low post and 5-foot 7 sophomore guard Shanterra Jones and 5-foot-9 freshman Tiajaney Hawkins caused Lowell high speed problems in the open court. Other than Merrillville, nobody is going to confront Lowell with as many good athletes as EC has.
Lowell led 10-9 when Kalyne Godbolt and Sarah Wietbrock scored back-to-back baskets for a six-point Lowell lead.
In the second quarter, EC rallied for a 17-17 tie on a fast break basket by
Jones, but Lowell juniors Katie Bobos and Mackenzie Kreutz scored close to the
basket and a Kruetz free throw made it 22-17 with 4:18 left in the half.
EC is two teams. With Moore, a giant post player who averaged 16.2 points and
9.6 rebounds, they have low-post scoring and defense. But when she is not in the
game, the Cardinals have five very fast players running the floor. But the key
is stopping Moore.
"That's the first time we've run a 2-3 (zone) all year," said Antcliff, "and we
basically just sandwiched her. We had Wietbrock in front of her and several
different players behind her. We just hoped we could take her out of the game.
But then they had 20 (Jones) and 22 (Hawkins) stepped up. That's going to be a
very good team."
Lowell, which slowed EC with a 1-2-2 press, forced 19 turnovers from the
Cardinals, 11 after halftime. They were able to disrupt EC's passes into the
post. No small item.
"If we play like a team, we can stand up against anybody. If we try to win
individually, then we have trouble. I am every proud of them. We had the game
with Hanover, then this game and then Crown Point. And Crown Point's going to be
tougher.
Lowell now knows where they stand in sectional play and they stand fairly tall.
Lowell's league, the Northwest Crossroads Conference, isn't tough this year. The
goal is to win the sectional.
"That's why we scheduled this," said Antcliff. "They pushed us into a couple of situations where we got rattled and we had to call time out."
Guard Kalyne Godbolt stood out in a high speed game where a lot of fouls were not
called. She scored 11 of her 14 points in the second half, including 6-of-6 from
the foul line in the fourth quarter.
"She didn't have a very good game against Hanover," said Antcliff of Godbolt,
the 5-foot-3 junior. "She tried to do too much with the ball. I told her to
remember she has four more players. She did a very good job here and she knocked
down some big free throws at the end."
DEVIL NOTES: Lowell improved to 4-1 and scored 60 or more points for the fourth
time in five games. The Devils were also 4-1 last year after losing to Crown
Point.
This was the first regular season meeting of EC and Lowell. The Devils topped EC
35-19 on Feb. 8, 2007 in the East Chicago Sectional. This year's sectional is at
Munster.
