GARY (2-10-2006)  To pull off a state tournament upset on the favored team's home floor, you need a lot of things in your game plan to go right.  And the other team has to cooperate.

That certainly did not happen when Lowell traveled Gary Friday night in the Class 4A sectional one semifinals.  The Cougars were more than ready, jumping to leads of 9-0, 17-1 and 30-9 on the way to a dominating 56-29 rout of a Lowell squad that set a regular season school mark for wins.

The speed of the Cougars was the big factor against Reed Devil point guard Ashley Cosentino as Lowell committed 31 turnovers, 21 in the first half.  The Red Devils (15-7), who average 21 foul shots a game, got to the line only 11 times, most of them late in the game.  Guard Julie Swisher, who led the Lake Athletic Conference (LAC) with 45 three point baskets during the regular season, was held to one three and seven total points.  West Side knew Lowell pretty well.

"We knew we had to key on two players," said West Side coach Rod Fisher. "The point guard's good.  She does a lot of things for them.  '22' (Swisher) can shoot.  She's a great shooter.  We forced turnovers and got the running game going and we were able to get ahead of them."

Lowell not only could not get good shots early they could not get any shots.

"It was a nightmare," said Lowell coach Patti McCormack.  "That's never what you want to happen and once it begins, we just couldn't pull out of it.  You always want the kids to finish on a positive note.  They always remember the last game they played and this is not one you want them to remember."

West Side shot the ball well from mid-range which is something Lowell did not want to see happen.  The game was loosely called by the officials, which is also some thing Lowell could not afford to have happen.

But truthfully, West Side did not overlook Lowell in anticipation of a championship Saturday night matchup with rival East Chicago.  And more than anything else, that's what the Red Devils needed.

"I'm standing in front of you with no answer," McCormack said.  "We practiced well all week.  We shot well (in practice) last night.  We didn't hesitate last night with guys (The boys 'red squad' practice team).  But tonight we were shell shocked.  I can't remember the last time we dug a hole like this."

Guard Jamie Sherls led the attack and the Cougars rolled up an unofficial total of 20 steals.

"Ashley started pressing harder and harder and the more you press," said McCormack, "the smaller the hole your looking at gets.  We needed a couple of kids to have their best games and no one did.  We got tentative.  I told them that I didn't care if they fouled out on five offensive fouls, I wanted them to attack the basket."

"This was not the team I saw all year."

Lowell had no highlights and avoided a low light when junior guard Kelly Johnson, who missed 16 games this season after knee surgery, went down with what appeared to be a minor injury to the same knee with just 1:38 left in the game.

Johnson, a Division I softball prospect, was checked out by the West Side trainer and was thought to be OK immediately after the game.

"It may have been a good thing," said McCormack.  "She may have just broken the rest of the scar tissue.  All of our hearts went straight to the ground.  But he (the West Side trainer) thought the structure of the knee was sound."

That was the best news on a long ride from Gary back to Lowell.

SECTIONAL NOTES:  Fisher liked the move of EC putting star guard Dee Dee Jernigan at the point for her senior year.

"What makes EC special this year is that she (Jernigan) has the ball in her hands this year as opposed to the last three years," he said.  "She can do whatever she wants to do with it most of the time."

Fisher changed his lineup after the Cougars loss to East Chicago in January.  Our two big sophomores (6-3 center Ish-Sha Terry and 5-11 Kim Brown) are gong to be good, but they're not ready to play yet.  Hopefully next year, they will be."

Fisher, who has now defeated Lowell three times in a  row in state tourney games, probably will never forget the time his 4th ranked team lost 35-33 in the old one-game, mid-week regional at Lowell in February of 2000.

"I can remember coming out of the locker room," Fisher said of that night.  "And you could hear the horns blaring in the parking lot and everybody was flashing their lights.  It was like a scene from 'Hoosiers.'"

West Side (15-7) has lost just 30 times in the last six years (they have a streak of four consecutive 20-win seasons that will almost certainly end this year). But other than the loss in the state finals last season, that one is perhaps most vivid.

"We reminded the girls about that game all week long," Fisher reported.

Lowell should have a solid team by the 2007 playoffs, including 5-10 Kim Bell, 5-6 Kara Lamb, 5-7 Katie Haberlyn and the 5-5 Johnson but they'll need to develop a point guard (it could be Johnson) and a wing shooter (it could be Lamb) to hope to challenge West Side, which had just four seniors on the roster Friday night.
