Moss and Tunnell earn MVC Honors

ST. LOUIS, MO (2-28-2006) Indiana State senior David Moss (Chicago, Ill./Thornwood HS) has been named the 2006 All-Missouri Valley Conference Second Team.  It is the second consecutive year Moss has been named to the all-conference second team.  He is the 14th player at ISU to earn All-MVC honors.  Freshman Jay Tunnell (Topeka, Kan./West HS) was named to the 2006 Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman Team.

Moss, who earned honorable mention all-conference honors after his sophomore campaign in 2004, was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete Second Team earlier this week.  He played and started in 19 games this season, despite suffering a partially torn hamstring during the year.

He finished the regular season second in the league in scoring (16.3 ppg), and averages 5.7 rebounds per contest.  Moss is sixth on the school’s all-time scoring list, seventh in made three pointers (113), eighth in assists (340) and seventh in steals (129).  He led the Sycamores in scoring a team-high ten times this season.  Moss also led the squad in assists eight times this season, and had the team-high in rebounds four times.

Tunnell, who becomes the fifth Sycamore to be named to the All-Freshman Team, finished the year averaging 8.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.  He was the second-leading scorer among freshmen in the MVC.  Tunnell played in 27 games during the regular season, and made 26 starts.  He scored in double figures 13 times this season, including a career-high 18 points at Bradley on January 21.

THREE SYCAMORES EARN MVC ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS

ST. LOUIS, MO (02-28-2006) – Indiana State junior Trent Wurtz (Sheboygan, Wis./George Mason) has been named to the 2006 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team.  Wurtz, who carries a 3.80 in communications, becomes the eleventh different Sycamore to earn league all-academic honors.  Senior David Moss (Chicago, Ill./Thornwood HS) was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete Second Team for the second consecutive year, while junior Tyson Schnitker (Robinson, Ill.) was placed on the second team after garnering honorable mention in 2005.

Wurtz appeared in all 27 games for ISU this season, and made 20 starts at forward. He finished the regular season averaging 7.6 points and 5.9 rebounds.  A transfer from George Mason, Wurtz scored a season-high 23 points at Wichita State on December 28 and hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds against Evansville in ISU’s regular-season finale.

A two-time selection to the MVC Scholar-Athlete Second Team, senior David Moss carries a 3.07 in sports studies.  He also earned academic honorable mention in 2004, following his sophomore season.  Moss is second in the league in scoring (16.3ppg), and averages 5.7 rebounds per contest. Schnitker, who carries a 3.30 grade point average in business, has started all 27 games during his junior season.  He is second on the team in scoring (10.9), and leads the team in made three pointers with 39.  Schnitker scored a career-high 24 points in ISU’s win at Southern Illinois on February 1. He dished out a career-high seven assists earlier this season against Campbell.

ISU finished the regular season with a record of 12-15 (4-14 MVC).  The Sycamores earned the No. 9 seed for the 2006 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.  ISU takes on Drake in the opening round. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:05 p.m., CST at Savvis Center in St. Louis.
