Penn tops ISU Sycamores, 86-48

East Lansing, MI (11-30-2003) - The Indiana State University men’s basketball team dropped an 86-48 decision to the University of Pennsylvania in the consolation game of the Coca-Cola Classic, hosted by Michigan State University. The Sycamores suffered their second consecutive loss, largely due to poor shooting, as ISU converted just 33.3 percent (20-of-60) of its field goals.

The Quakers (2-2) jumped out to an early lead as Charlie Copp connected on six three-point field goals in the first eight minutes to push Penn ahead 20-4 in the early stages of the game. The Sycamores battled back the next seven minutes, and drew within twelve points (29-17) before the Quakers surged ahead for a 43-20 halftime advantage.

ISU (1-2) made the first two baskets of the second half, but would draw no closer than 19 points 43-24, as the Quakers cruised to an 86-48 win. Penn finished the contest with a .611 shooting percentage (33-of-54), including 12-of-21 (.571) from three-point range. The Sycamores, meanwhile, struggled to find their shooting touch the entire game.

Copp led all scorers with 18 points, while Adam Chubb tallied 14 points and a game-high eleven rebounds for the Quakers. Sophomore Ted Morris (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade HS) tied a career-high with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. David Moss (Chicago, Ill./Thornwood HS) recorded twelve points for ISU, while Derron Evans (Chicago, Ill./Providence St. Mel HS) led the Sycamores with five rebounds.

Penn outrebounded the Sycamores 40-24, and used an advantage along the front line to outscore ISU 34-18 in the paint. The trees finished the game with just ten assists and eleven turnovers, which Penn converted into 16 points.
