TERRE
HAUTE, IN - (10-4-2003) —
Indiana State's Jake Shields rushed for over
100 yards as the Sycamores fell to Southern Illinois, 37-14. The Indiana State
Sycamores (3-3, 0-1 Gateway) fell behind Southern Illinois (5-0, 1-0 Gateway) by
a score of 20-0 after some early miscues, and the Salukis were able to squash a
Sycamore comeback attempt in the second half as they took a 37-14 win over
Indiana State in the Gateway opener for both schools.
SIU broke though first when Chris Kupec caught a seven-yard pass from Joel Sambursky with 12:39 left in the first quarter in a drive that was set up by a Jake Shields fumble on the first play from scrimmage of the game. A Jake Schiff interception on ISU’s next possession, gave the Salukis the ball at their own 49 and it took them six plays to move the ball 51 yards as the scored on a 41-yard pass from Sambursky to Brent Little to push the advantage to 14-0.
The Salukis next possession was a marathon drive that went 13 plays for 69 yards and ended with a Sambursky one-yard run on a bootleg play. The drive was delayed for over 20 minutes as umpire Richard Zerr was knocked out on the field and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher. After the drive was over, SIU took a 20-0 lead. The Salukis tacked on three more points on a 32-yard Craig Coffin field goal before the Sycamores took the ball for the final possession of the half.
ISU was aided in that drive by a defensive pass interference penalty and a personal foul by the Salukis that set up a Schiff to Ryan King 29-yard pass to inch ISU back into the game at 23-7 heading into the half.
Schiff’s second interception of the game gave the Salukis the ball at the Indiana State 25-yard line to open the second half and the Sycamore defense stood tall, stopping SIU at the four-yard line on fourth and one. On ISU’s first play, Kris Karagory fumbled at their own two and SIU’s Frank Johnson pounced on the ball, giving SIU just two yards to go for a touchdown.
The Salukis’ Courtney Abbott had to run the ball 12 yards on an option reverse to score after a pair of false start penalties , giving SIU a 30-7 lead.
Indiana State would not go away as they took the ball down the field on seven plays for 80 yards with Jake Shields churning out the yards and scoring on a 17 yard play with 4:12 left in the third quarter.
The scoring was rounded out when Sambursky hit his third touchdown of the day on a 15-yard pass to Kupec with 6:50 left in the game to give SIU a final total of 37-14.
Shields recorded yet another 100-yard rushing game with 127 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Schiff finished 11 of 32 with a touchdown and 176 yards. The Sycamores’ leading receiver was King with three catches for 50 yards and a touchdown while Chris Lewis also caught three passes for 35 yards.
