ISU Sycamores fall to Salukis, 64-53

CARBONDALE, IL (2-9-2005) – Matt Shaw pumped in 22 points, while Tony Young came off the bench to score 16 for Southern Illinois as the Salukis defeated Indiana State, 64-53, on Wednesday (Feb. 9). Senior Amani Daanish led the Sycamores with 13 points and 13 rebounds, giving him his second double-double of the season, and third of his career.

Southern Illinois finished the game 23-of-55 (.418) from the field, while limiting the Sycamores to 33 percent (16-of-49) from the floor. The Trees were also limited to just seven assists, which tied a season low.

Trailing by seven points (31-24) at the half, the Sycamores found themselves down just four with 18:33 to play when Gabriel Moore sank a three-point shot. SIU moved the lead to nine (41-32) midway through the half, but the Sycamores cut the lead to five when David Moss sank two free throws with 10:12 to play in the game. The Salukis then used a 15-3 run over the next five minutes to take a 17-point lead (56-39) with 5:33 remaining in the game.

David Moss finished the game with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Gabriel Moore tallied ten points, all of which came in the second half. The Sycamores enjoyed a 37-34 edge on the glass, as ISU was aided by 13 offensive rebounds. ISU scored 14 second-chance points, while the Salukis tallied 17 points off 13 ISU turnovers.

The loss drops ISU to 8-16 (3-10 MVC) on the year, while Southern Illinois improves to 19-6 (10-3). 

Indiana State returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 12), when the Sycamores host Evansville. Tip-off between the Sycamores and Purple Aces is set for 12:05 p.m. CST.
