ISU Sycamores fall in final seconds to Redbird, 62-61

NORMAL, IL (1-6-2005) – Trey Guidry’s jumper in the lane with six seconds left to play lifted the Illinois State Redbirds to a 62-61 win over the Indiana State Sycamores on Thursday (Jan. 6). ISU’s Gabriel Moore raced the ball up the floor, but had his shot blocked by Lorenzo Gordon in the final second of play.

David Moss made two free throws with 3:51 remaining in the game to pull the Sycamores within one (58-57) of the Redbirds. Moss knocked down a jumper two possessions later to give the Trees a 59-58 advantage with 1:35 to play. Illinois State’s Lorenzo Gordon slipped to the basket and made a layup with 35 seconds remaining to give the Redbirds a brief 60-59 lead. Moss knocked down a shot in the lane to give the Sycamores a 61-60 lead with 21 seconds remaining before Guidry gave the Redbirds the lead for good.

Moss recorded a double-double, leading all scorers a game-high 22 points. He added a game-high 11 rebounds and scored the Sycamores’ last ten points of the game. Sophomore Tyson Schnitker pumped in 13 for ISU. Amani Daanish scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds before fouling out with 4:39 to play.

Lorenzo Gordon led the Redbirds with 20 points. Neil Plank came off the bench and scored 17 for Illinois State. He also recorded a team-high seven rebounds. Illinois State’s bench outscored the Sycamores, 28-9. The Redbirds tallied 21 assists and nine steals as a team.

Indiana State falls to 5-9 (0-3 MVC) on the season while Illinois State moves to 10-4 (2-2 MVC) on the year. The Sycamores return to action on Sunday (Jan. 9) when they begin a four-game homestand against Northern Iowa. Tip-off between the Sycamores and Panthers is scheduled for 2:05 p.m., CST at Hulman Center.
