HAUTE, IN (1-15-2005) – After
trailing 34-28 at halftime, the Indiana State men's basketball team shot 60.9
percent in the second half (14-of-23) en route to a 64-60 victory over the
visiting Wichita State Shockers Saturday (Jan. 15) night at Hulman Center. It
was the second straight victory for ISU as they improve to 7-10 overall and 2-4
in the MVC. The Sycamores handed WSU its first league loss of the season as they
fall to 11-2 on the year and 4-1 in the conference.
With eight minutes to play in the game, Wichita State led by seven after Kyle Mitchell drove through the lane to hit a lay-up. Both teams went scoreless for the next 2:16 until David Moss broke the drought when he hit a jumper to spur a 7-0 run for the Sycamores that tied the game at 54-54. After trading baskets, the Sycamores went up for good when Moss hit three straight baskets for ISU. WSU had a shot to tie the game with 20 seconds remaining, but the errant shot was pulled down by Russell Trudeau, who then hit two free throws to seal the victory.
Moss was the leading scorer for the Sycamores, scoring 14 of his team-high 18 points in the second stanza. The Chicago, Ill. native finished the game on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw stripe. Gabriel Moore recorded another career-high with 16 points in 34 minutes of play hitting a perfect 6-of-6 from the field, while Tyson Schnitker contributed ten points, knocking down all four of his shots, including two three-pointers.
Kyle Wilson led the way for Wichita State with 23 points and six rebounds. Wilson came off the bench and knocked down 6-of-12 shots and eight of his nine attempted free throws. Jamar Howard pitched in 15 points and Paul Miller added eight points and seven boards in the losing effort.
The Sycamores finished the game connecting on 24-of-45 shooting from the field (.533), compared to the Shockers 37.9 percent (22-of-58).
The Sycamores will conclude their four-game homestand when they host Illinois State on Wednesday (Jan.19). Tip-off is scheduled for 6:05 p.m., CST. The game will be televised by WTWO-TV.
