ISU Sycamores jolt Shockers, 64-63

WICHITA, KS (1-17-2004) - David Moss’ (Chicago, Ill./Thornwood HS) 15-foot jump shot with 1.5 seconds left to play lifted the Sycamores past Wichita State 64-63, on Saturday (Jan. 17). Moss’ jumper capped a wild sequence in the last minute, which saw the Sycamores overcome a four-point deficit with just 14 seconds to play. The Trees’ defense stood tall down the stretch, as the Shockers failed to make a field goal during the final 4:33 of the contest.

Trailing 63-59, Russell Trudeau (Lafayette, Ind./Catholic Central HS) was fouled on a three-point shot attempt with 6.6 seconds on the clock. Trudeau connected on all three free throws to cut the WSU lead to 63-62. Randy Burns was tied up by Darron Evans (Chicago, Ill./Providence St. Mel HS) and Wilfred Antoine (New Orleans, La./Coffeyville JC) on the ensuing inbounds play. The possession arrow gave the Sycamores the ball with 3.5 remaining on the clock, which set up Moss’ jumper from the right wing.

Moss led ISU with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Antoine and Catrel Green (Aurora, Ill./Feather River CC) came off the bench and added eleven and ten points, respectively. The Sycamores finished the game 23-of-46 (.500) from the floor, including 10-of-24 (.417) from behind the three-point line.

Fridge Holman paced the Shockers (10-6, 3-3 MVC) with a game-high 15 points. Rob Kampman tallied twelve points, while Randy Burns added eleven points and a team-high eight boards. The Shockers finished 22-of-45 (.489) from the floor.

ISU fell behind 25-18 midway through the first half, but used a 15-2 run over 3:15 late in the opening stanza to take a 33-27 lead before settling for a three-point (35-32) cushion at the half.
