The Out of Town Scoreboard

A USA-365.com Special Report By Mark Smith

(4-19-2006)

INDIANAPOLIS, IN  (4-19-2006)  University of Indianapolis senior and Andrean graduate Lindsey Mishevich (2002) has done a lot of good things on the softball field the last few years for the Division II University of Indianapoolis.  But hitting home runs was not among them.  As her college eligibility ends, the Crown Point native is finding her way with the 'big fly'.  Mishevich hit home runs in both games of a double-header for the first time in her career last week as the Indianapolis Greyhounds swept a double-header 5-1 and 7-0 from St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer.  After 40 games, Mishevich was batting .290 (36 of 124, .290) with 18 extra base hits including four home runs.  The odd part is, Mishevich, who had an 11-game hitting streak at the end of play Monday (4-17-2006) did not hit a home run in the entire 2005 season.

Also at UIndy, senior Beth Wendlinger of Hanover Center (2002) was named Great Lakes Valley Conference 'Pitcher of the Week' four weeks in a row.  While that probably says something about the pitching depth this year in the GLVC, Wendlinger (21-6) is having a career year.  And even though little sister Amanda Wendlinger (2005) was having a good debut season, Indianapolis (29-15) has gone to pitching Beth in every game and it's working for them.  Wendlinger helped the Greyhounds to their 4-0 slate, recording wins over Saint Joseph's College (SJC) and Kentucky Wesleyan College (KWC).

The senior ace for the Greyhounds threw 21 more innings without allowing an earned run, giving her six straight appearances (38.0 innings) without an earned run.  She picked-up two more shutouts, one over SJC and one over KWC, giving her eight for the season.  She has only allowed one earned run in her last 56 innings.  In 14 appearances since Mar. 25, the senior righthander has pitched 87.0 innings and only allowed three earned runs (0.24 ERA).  Wendlinger has gone 13-1 over that stretch.  Since starting the year 8-5, Wendlinger has gone 12-1 since.  For the season, Wendlinger has 166 strikeouts to her credit and owns a tiny 1.06 ERA.

Amanda Wendlinger was 8-9 with a 1.69 ERA after 19 appearances allowing 103 hits and 23 walks in 115 innings.  Those numbers are similar to what Beth Wendlinger did her freshman season at UIndy.  The Greyhounds are now riding a season-high six game winning streak and have wins in 17 of their last 20 contests.  UIndy heads to Michigan for four non-conference games, beginning with a Saturday doubleheader at Wayne State.

After 37 games, Lake Central grad Katie Mitchell (2005) is batting a solid .273 (24-88, .273) with 14 RBIs for Purdue (26-24).  Mitchell has missed some time lately but her first yrear numbers are very good for a freshman in Big-10 play.

LC grad Brooke Baker (2003) was 13-12 with a 2.72 ERA after 167 innings for the Boilermakers. Baker has struck out 102 and has 19 complete games but she also has allowed 63 walks and 44 extra base hits. Opposing batters are hitting a healthy .273 against the right-hander.

Munster's Lori Andjelich (2005)
is 9-7 with a 1.18 ERA after 20 games and 117 innings for Division II Grand Valley State in Michigan. Opponents are batting .190 against her.  Andjelich picked up her second save Saturday (4-15-6) in a 3-2 win over Gannon College.

Purdue North Central (24-13) set a school record for wins with a double-header sweep 6-2 and 10-2 over Grace College.  Offensively, the Panthers were led by junior third baseman Tony Popov (Center Grove -2003) who had two doubles and three RBIs.  Sophomore outfielder Jared Mrozinske (LaPorte-2004) added three hits and an RBI while freshman C.J. Rowe (South Central -2005) also added a double for the Panthers.

In game two the Panthers knocked out 15 hits and Mrozinske had another solid game with two hits (one double), two runs and two RBI while freshman outfielder Dave Dickerson (Crown Point -2005) added a double and two runs scored.

Griffith's Ben Bartley (2004) is batting .333 (36 of 108) after 30 games for South Suburban College.

After 31 games for Michigan State (17-15), Lowell's Ryan Basham (2003) is leading MSU in hitting with a .384 average (43-112, .384), four home runs and 32 RBIs. Basham, who holds almost every Lowell batting record, was 3-for-5 Sunday in MSUs 12-11 loss to Penn State.

Former Lowell football star Toby Goetz (2005) makes his debut in the spring game for Division II power Saginaw Valley State Saturday in the school's spring game.  Goetz, a 225-pound fullback, was redshirted in the fall of 2005 after gaining 1,930 yards for Lowell in 2004.

Andrean's Katie Sheaks (2003) is batting,.283 as a right fielder with 24 RBIs for Division I DePaul (19-14).  Sheaks was a two-time 20-game winner as a pitcher for the 59ers in 2002 and 2003.

Wabash College's Matt Dodaro of Lake Central (2005)
is bating .350 with 11 doubles after 27 games.  Dodaro was an all-area infielder for the DAC champions last year.

Former Andrean all-stater Nick Stockwell (2004)
is still getting limited time in his redshirt freshman season at the University of Illinois (16-16). He has just nine at-bats this year.  Stockwell was all-area in two sports at Andrean in 2003 and 2004, batting .436 with eight home runs for a state finals team in 2004.  I know Stockwell is a quality player, but it's hard to say when he'll get a real chance at Illinois.  Fortunately, he did redshirt in 2005.  That would indicate, (I hope) that there is a plan for him to play down the line.

At Southern Indiana University, Lake Central's Adam Summers (2003) had a 3-2 record, a  2.52 ERA,  32 strikeouts and five walks in 46 innings for the Eagles (14-22).  Crown Point's Adam Vetter (2003) is also 3-2 with a 2.76 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 42 innings.  The Eagles problem isn't pitching.  They were batting just .242 as a team after 36 games.

After 24 games at Division III Millikin College (11-13) in Decatur, Illinois. Crown Point's Jimmy Wilson (2005)
has a 2.70 ERA and an 0-1 record after 13 innings of work.  Wilson has allowed 21 base hits but only four earned runs in his freshman season.

Tommy Finn of Andrean (2005)
was 1-for-3 in Northwestern's 7-3 loss to Valparaiso Tuesday (4-19-2006) and Finn has started to hit.  His average after 33 games is now .228, which is almost 50 points above where it was three weeks ago.  Finn is 23 of 101 with 28 strikeouts but he got off to a typical freshman start, batting under .100 for the first 10 games.

Lake Central's  Brett Summers (2005)
settled in at South Suburban College (27-9)  where he has a 3.37 ERA aftre 28 innings for the Division I junior college.  Summers, a 6-foot-6 right-hander has struck out 27 and walked 13.
Summers was all all-area pitcher and varsity basketball starter three years in a row for LC.
