Boys Top-10 Poll

Northwest Indiana

(12-16-2002)

A USA-365.com Special Report By Mark Smith

1. Munster (6-0)

11-29-2002:  66-37  at Highland  (0-2)
11-30-2002:  53-50  at Merrillville (1-1)

12-2-2002:     73-49 Andrean (2-1)
12-6-2002:   76-61  Frankfort (2-1)
at the Hammond Civic Center

12-13-2002:    60-47 Hammond (1-3)
12-14-2002:    78-58  Lake Central  (4-1)

The Mustangs had the off game on the right night, against weak Hammond instead of strong Lake Central. John Jamicich had 10 3-point goals in two weekend games. The next challenge is against Crown Point (4-2) in the Highland Holiday Tournament. Hopefully this team is experienced enough to understand that wins in December are worth about as much as Al Gore for president bumper stickers.

2. MERRILLVILLE (2-1)

11-29-2002:  64-49 Highland (0-2)
11-30-2002:  50-53 Munster (2-0)

12-14-2002;  61-58 Andrean (2-2)

Okay, so they got lucky against Andrean. But the Pirates have not played many games. Sophomore point guard Josh Mayo scored 19 and that's a good sign. A big test looms. Not Friday at Michigan City but Saturday at undefeated Gary Roosevelt.

3. ANDREAN (3-2)

12-2-2002:  83-55 Hammond (0-1)

12-4-2002:   49-73  at  Munster (4-0)
12-6-2002:    69-57 at Maconaquah (2-1)

12-13-2002:   71-43 Highland (1-3)
12-14-2002:    59-62 at Merrillville (2-1)

Andrean should be 4-1 but Merrillville stole the game on Lavell's Cook's 40-foot prayer shot Saturday night.  Pete Trgovich scored 21 Friday and and Brett Goins (11 on Friday) is a big addition.

4. Gary Roosevelt (4-0)

East Chicago Thanksgiving Tournament

11-29-2002:  63-40 Portage (0-2)
11-30-2002:  60-58 East Chicago (1-1)
12-2-2002:  69-59 Valparaiso (1-1)

12-12-2002: 91-73 at Lew Wallace  (3-2)

NaQuan Jackson (14.3 ppg.) scored 19 against Lew Wallace and Larry Upshaw (16.5 ppg.) has scored in double figures in every game.  The Panthers are only 43 of 76
(56.4 %) from the foul line, though. That will catch up with them.

5. CROWN POINT (4-2)

11-27-2002:  74-46 at Gavit (0-1)
11-30-2002:  85-86  Lake Central (2-0)

12-5-2002:  76-41 at Clark  (2-1)
12-6-2002:   56-54 (West Lafayette) Harrison (1-3)

12-13-2002:  59-40 at Griffith (1-1)
12-14-2002:   55-60 East Chicago (3-3)

Brian Sparks scored 28 in the blowout of Griffith but the Panthers don't have much right now.  CP shot just 2-of-13 in the fourth quarter against East Chicago and they haven't played a strong game at home yet.   This should be CP's best team in several years, but it's still a hard team to read.

6. Lake Central  (4-1)

11-27-2002:   75-41   Lowell (1-1)
11-30-2002:   86-85 at Crown Point (1-1)
12-6-2002:     87-70 Kankakee Valley (1-1)

12-13-2002:   74-47 at Portage (1-4)
12-14-2002:   58-78 at Munster

LC feel behind 23-10 in the first quarter at Munster Saturday night and I'm not sure the absence of coach Jim Black didn't have something to do with that. Adam Diekman scored 39 in two weekend games.   We'll know more after LC hosts East Chicago Friday.

7. East Chicago (3-3)

East Chicago Thanksgiving Tournament

11-29-2002:  70-53 Lew Wallace (1-1)
11-30-2002:  58-60 (OT) Gary Roosevelt (2-0)

12-5-2002:  62-63 (OT)  (South Bend) Clay (1-0)
12-6-2002:  72-81 at (South Bend) Riley (3-1)

12-13-2002:  64-35 Michigan City (2-1)
12-13-2002:  60-55 at Crown Point (4-2)

A very impressive weekend without top scorer Tremaine Cooley, who is injured. Only four players scored in the win over Crown Point but Mel Brown had 19 against the Bulldogs.

8. Chesterton (3-0)

11-26-2002:  78-24 at River Forest (0-2)
12-5-2002:   49-47 Wheeler (3-1)

12-14-2002:   73-66 at (SB) Clay (2-2)

What's gotten into Matt Campbell (21.3 ppg.)?  Tom Radtke (13.3 ppg.) and Mike Yagelski (13.6 pg.) were supposed to be the leading scorers.  The Trojans sank 18 of 25 (72 %) from the foul line last week.

9. Valparaiso (1-1)

11-27-2002:  73-36  at Boone Grove (0-1)
12-3-2002:  59-69 at Gary Roosevelt (3-0)

12-14-2002:  84-56 Elkhart Memorial (0-6)

6-2 senior Mike Hills (19.8) is out of control with 14 three-point baskets in three games.   VHS is also 43 of 59 from the line (72.8 percent) from the foul line.

10. LaPorte  (2-1)

11-27-2002:  80-96 at (South Bend) Riley (1-0)
12-4-2002:   81-42 New Prairie (0-2)

12-14-2002:  62-50  (SB) Washington  (2-2)

LaPorte is clearly still a work-in-progress offensively and that work has to be completed soon.  Every Duneland Athletic Conference team but Portage had a winning record as of Dec. 15.

SMALL SCHOOLS

1. Wheeler (4-1)

11-29-2002:  87-54 River Forest (0-2)

12-3-2002:  104-38  Lake Station (0-3)
12-5-2002:  47-49  at Chesterton (2-0)

12-13-2: 59-54 at Morgan Township (2-2)
12-14-2: 79-47 at Marquette (0-4)

Todd Schafer (32.0 ppg.) is still rolling up the points but he'll see tougher defenses than RF and LS. (or frankly, than Marquette or Morgan).  I know that LaCrosse (Thursday night - Dec,. 19) is 3-1 but It's looks like the Jan. 17 game at Boone Grove is the next big thing.

2. Kouts (5-0)

11-27-2002:   87-39  at West Central (0-2)
11-29-2002:   63-50 at Hebron (0-1)

12-6-2002:  72-55 North Newton (3-1)

12-13-2:  63-58 at South Central (3-2)
12-14-2:  101-72 Kankakee Valley (1-2)

Ricky Hise (26.2 ppg.) is now the all-time PCC leading scorer after his 33-point game against Kouts last Saturday. But his 2003 scoring championship race with Wheeler's Todd Schafer has just begun.   Did anybody notice that guard Adam Pendowski (18.4 ppg.) scored 30 for Kouts Saturday night. No. I didn't either.

3. BOONE GROVE (2-1)

11-27-2002:  36-73 at Valparaiso (0-1)
12-5-2002:  61-36  Washington Township (0-2)

12-13-2002: 63-36  River Forest (0-6)

Hey, Boone's not supposed to have too many players this year?

Boone Grove has a 6-3 freshman named Will Mitchell (7.3 ppg.) and, while his numbers are modest, freshman rarely play on the varsity at Boone. Junior Center Phil Bien (11.0 ppg.) is consistent and sophomore forward Danny Borys (12.3 ppg.) has scored in double figures in every game in his rookie season.
Guards Michael Christensen and Marcus Banning are strong enough for another league and sectional title run.

4. HANOVER CENTRAL  (3-1)

11-27-2002:  60-34 at Lake Station (0-2)
11-29-2002:  49-38 Elmwood Park, Ill. (2-2)
12-6-2002:   46-40 Hebron (0-2)

12-14-2002:  56-62 at Washington Township (2-2)

Hanover led most of the way before letting the WT game slip away.   The Cats need more scoring out of their forwards. Seems like they're almost an all-perimeter attack. They've got to start winning away from home (Lake Station doesn't really count) and the time to do it is Saturday night (Dec. 21) at Kankakee Valley where the Cats have not won in almost 10 years.

5. Hebron (1-2)

11-30-2002:   50-63 Kouts (5-0)
12-6-2002:  40-46 at Hanover Central (3-1)
12-13-2002:  63-61 LaCrosse (3-1)

Nobody really stops 6-5 senior Ryan Raglan (18.6 PPG). And the Hawks have found a guard in 5-10 sop Drew Greece (11.3 PPG). Junior Ryan Blindly (9.8 PPG). scored 11 in the come-from-behind win over Lacrosse.

BOYS NOTES: The Andiron game against Gary Roosevelt is set for Wednesday night (Dec. 18) at Andiron.  The Highland Holiday Tournament semifinals will have CP. (4-2) vs. Muenster (6-0) at 6 p.m. on Dec. 27 with KV (1-2) and Highland (1-3) playing at 8 p.m.  CP will play Munster at least twice because the Bulldogs have a regularly scheduled game at Munster on Feb. 1, 2003.  Merrillville hosts Boone Grove on Feb. 1.

Hobart, only 6-15 last year, is 3-1 heading into Friday's game with LaPorte. Undefeated Munster (6-0) plays at undefeated Chesterton (3-0) Saturday (Dec. 21) but Munster and Gary Roosevelt cannot meet this year.  Valparaiso plays at Chesterton Friday (Dec. 20). Unless they have changed their schedule, Hammond does not have a game between Saturday's Dec. 21 game at Lowell and Jan. 10. 2003, when they travel to Calumet.
