Crown
Point varsity coach Tom May was asked to preview and profile the 2004 Lady
Bulldogs varsity basketball team. Here's what he had to say, as compiled
by Mark Smith for the Lake County Star .
Mallory
Michaels - 5-4 senior guard
1.4 ppg
10-13 FTs: 68.5% (only played 20 quarters)
Mallory is probably the one kid on our team that has had to work more for what
she has in her life. It probably means more to her to put on the uniform than
any other of our kids even though she knows she may not start. She works
Saturday and Sunday trying to earn money to be able to go to school. You'll see
that on the floor. She's a lot tougher.
Blayre
Reeves - 5-10 senior forward
7.0 ppg.
55-134 FGs: 41.0%, 24-41 FTs: 58.5%
4.7 rebounds, 32 steals
Blayre is by far the most talented senior I have. This is a crucial year for
Blayre. She might be our most talented athlete and we've going to give her the
opportunity to do a lot of different things. But with that goes the
responsibility to put up numbers. By numbers we means steals, we mean rebounds,
we mean points. When a person walks out of the CP gym, we want them to say 'That
Blayre Reeves is good.'
Stephanie
Sandilla - 5-7 senior forward
played only 8
quarters last season
She'll never hurt us. Athletically, she's probably our least gifted player but
because of her attitude. Her quality of caring for other people. She'll be a big
asset to our team. She's a great kid.
Cassie
Pruzin - 5-8 junior guard
9.6 ppg,
69-176 FGs: 39.6%; 44-64 FTs: 68.7%; 21-74 3-FGs: 28.3%
3.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists; 128 steals (1st in NW Indiana)
I think Cassie is the best point guard in the area. I think my
relationship with her is much better than it's been in the past. She is by far
the most skilled basketball player we have. The other kids look to her to carry
our team. The key is, when everything goes south, and things are bad on the
floor, can she still fulfill that role. That's what colleges are looking for.
We're trying to put her in the mold of former kids who were Indiana all-stars.
We want her to get to that point. She's the best point guard here. But we want
her to be the best point guard in the state. She can't listen to people telling
her things because people around here don't know who the best point guard in the
state is.
Kaitlyn
Sertich - 5-8 junior guard
4.7 ppg,
40-111 FGs: 36.0%; 6-8 FTs: 75%; 13-44 3-FGs: 29.5%
2.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 41 steals
Kaitlyn is probably our best athlete. She played very well the last third of the
season. She played the best game of any of our kids in the sectional against
Valpo. She is going to do very nice things for us. She can shoot the ball. She's
great defensively. She moves all the time and she's very aggressive. She's
not real big but a 5-7 guard, that's not that small.
Jill
Weiand - 5-10 junior center
3.5 ppg. 21-76
FGs: 27.6%; 32-54 FTs: 59.2%;
4.9 rebounds, 14 blocked shots
Jill will start in the post. We give her a lot of freedom to step out and attack
the basket. Do a lot of different shots. She's attacking the basket. We run an
open post, high post offense. Great kid. Very positive. Always have a smile. We
liked her. Always have.
Jackie
Clements - 5-9 sophomore forward-center
New
to the varsity
We have two sophomores who are going to step up and make an impact. Jackie is
the strongest kid on our team. Bench presses about 125. She won't be pushed
around. She's coming off an outstanding soccer season. Jackie's all intensity.
She'll do anything we say. She'll back up Jill at the '5'
and Blayre at the '4' so she'll get a lot of minutes. She is very, very strong.
Hannah
Plumley - 5-8 sophomore guard
New to the
varsity
Hannah has grown and she's stronger. She's coming off volleyball like Jill and
Blayre. Hannah is really a point guard but I'm not going to sit a really nice
player because Cassie Pruzin has to be out there. We felt that we play 3 guards
anyway. She'll play the '3' spot. She can handle the ball and shoot it so she'll
play on the wing like Allison Isailovich (2003 grad) did. She's probably a
better athlete than Allison was and Hannah is still growing.
Anjellica
Rospond - 6-0 freshman center
She's a
young kid who came from St. Mary's. She's a '5' player. She's a little behind
but we think that with a lot of work, she'll be able to do things for us from
the middle to the end of the season.
Courtney
Perry - 5-11 freshman center
Courtney
may get a lot bigger. Her dad is bigger than Respond's dad and five or six
inches bigger than her. In two weeks she's already doing a lot of nice things.
When she and Anjelica start to move through the program, we're going to go
to a double low post offense and use them both. She went to Taft as a kid
and that's why she's probably ahead of Anjellica right now.
Coach Tom
May's Outlook:
Head
varsity basketball coach 25th year (390-137)
Neither one of them (the 2 freshman) is ready. Both of our freshman each have
five quarters for each of them to participate each night and we're going to use
all of them. Starting early, probably three quarters easy with (JV coach Scott)
Reid. Then we have two quarter, or a total of four with both girls to bring them
along slowly. Throw them in a few minutes at a time to bring them along.
We've got Jill Weiand who's playing extremely well. And we've got Jackie
Clements. She's the strongest girl on the team and she's 5-foot-9.
Really, we've got eight varsity girls. We don't have to have 14-15 people like
we did last year. We're going to go after people with the same kids. Our
strength is our guard play and our aggressiveness and the amount of pressure
we're going to be able to apply on the ball at all times. Another strength
might be shooting the basketball because we're shooting extremely well right
now. But the key is to get the ball off the glass and dictate the tempo of the
game. That's the whole key to this season.
Mentally, we've got to have our kids focus in on what we can do to be better.
What can I do to help my teammates. The 'John Kennedy-esqe' ask not what your
country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. Lose the
attitude, gain the gratitude. We have great kids but we have kids who have been
given a lot and they need to be more accountable for their own actions.
They can't be looking for the coaching staff to take care of everything. The
kids in CP have changed since 1980 and a lot has to do with money and affluence.
Merrillville would have been the team (in the DAC) even without DeMuth. They're
the favorite. But Valparaiso really is having the best run of any team since
I've been here. Both Humes and the (Cassie) Kerns girl. And (Lauren) Hutton is
all heart. If we knock either of them off, we're doing something good. And we
get three chances to try to figure out things. Everybody else is pretty much
equal. We're a little smaller than most teams. The best team we'll see all
year is Warsaw. They will be the number one ranked team in the state to
start the year.
