Central varsity coach Chris York was asked to preview
and profile this years Lady Wioldcats basketball team. Here's what he
had to say, courtesy of the Lake County Star newspaper.
Melissa
Braner - 5'9" Senior forward - 1.7 ppg., 1.3 rpg.
Melissa brings quite a bit of energy to the team. She will be looked upon
to provide leadership and to be a defensive presence. Mel has the ability to
defend nearly every position on the floor.
Sarah Csikos - 5'4" Senior guard/forward
After
taking a year off to allow an injury to heal Sarah is back to add more
athleticism to the team. Sarah will definitely help defensively and,
despite her size, mix it up inside as well.
Jill Mc Elmurry - 5'9" Junior guard/forward - 6.5 ppg., 3.2 rpg.
Jill
is our leading scorer and rebounder returning from last year's team. She
will be be asked to raise her game a bit in those categories. She will be
looking to get her shooting on track as well as being more assertive inside.
Karrah Adam - 5'4" Junior guard - 3.4 ppg., 1.6 apg.
Karrah is the second-leading scorer, and assist leader of the returnees.
Karrah will spend time at the 1 and 2 positions this year. We will hope to get
her some shooting opportunities from the '2' spot.
Katie Burke - 5'7" Junior forward - 2.2 ppg., 1.9 rpg.
Katie will be playing the '3' or '4' spots on the floor most of the time.
She has made improvements in her shooting and could be another scoring option
for us. Katie's speed and strength can also make her a good defensive
player.
Bess Copak - 5'5" Junior guard/forward
Bess
is new to the varsity and has made great improvements in the off-season. She has good court-awareness and a decent shot.
Bess could play nearly any
position on the floor because she plays bigger than she is.
Christie Wick- 5'8" Sophomore guard/forward - 2.7 ppg., 2.9 rpg.
Christie is another player who can play multiple positions. She will see more
time at the point position than in the past, but also a great deal at the '2',
and '3' spots. With maybe a bit of confidence gained from a good freshman
season, Christie could be a major factor in any success we may have.
Amanda Wendlinger- 5'4" Sophomore guard - 2.7 ppg.
Amanda also got quite a bit of playing time last year at the '1', and '2'
positions. She will be spending more time at the '2' spot this year to try
to focus more on her shot, which can be very good at times. Amanda will
also be called upon to use her speed to be a defensive catalyst.
Alisha Staley - 5'7" Sophomore guard/forward
Alisha is another newcomer to the varsity, and another player who seems to have
made great strides in the off-season. Alisha seems to have grown a bit,
but also improved her offensive game. She has always been a good defensive
player and one who could drive to the basket, but now she seems to have added a
nice jump shot to her arsenal. She will play spots '1' through '3'.
Krysta Rickey - 5'3" Freshman guard
Krysta could be the heir apparent to fill a spot which has been lacking for a
couple of years; the point guard position. Krysta has great speed coupled with
good ball-handling skills and court vision. If she can get through the
jitters, and indecision of being a freshman on varsity early, she will be quite
an asset to the team.
Outlook:
Last year our roster consisted of six first-time varsity players in what amounted to a season in which high expectations were not realized. This year those players are back with hopefully some added confidence and with some of the growing pains worked out. We are already a much different team than we've been in many years. We have no player taller than 5'9" and many in the 5'4"-5'5" range. This will pose some obvious problems, but we are also a more athletic team than we have been in the past. We are also without the "franchise" player we've been accustomed to, but I don't see that as being a bad thing. We are structuring everything around team play, which in the long run is going to be a benefit.
Overall,
I see us as a work in progress. The girl's feel like they have something
to prove, and they didn't like the lopsided outcomes of some of last year's
games. You'll see a little bit different style of game, and you'll definitely
see a new attitude. We hope to have a lot of fun this season.
