State (4-3, 1-2 Gateway) was able to comeback from a 28-21 deficit versus
Southwest Missouri State (5-2, 2-1 Gateway) by scoring a touchdown in the waning
minutes of the contest, but the Bears took the ensuing kickoff back within field
goal range.
Kicker Jon Scifres kicked a field goal with three seconds remaining, lifting Southwest Missouri State to a 31-28 victory over Indiana State on Saturday night.
The Sycamores tied the game with 23 seconds to go on a 15-yard touchdown run by Phillip Johnson, but the Bears set up Scifres' winning kick with a 61-yard return by Scottie Reddix on the ensuing kickoff.
Cody Pratt then rushed 6 yards to the Indiana State 21, and after two timeouts, Scifres hit the game-winner.
Southwest Missouri overcame a 14-0 deficit after Indiana State's Jake Shields' 35-yard touchdown reception and Courtney Reese's 44-yard punt return in the first quarter. Reese’s punt return for a score was the first for a Sycamore since 1999.
Pratt finished with 137 yards rushing, and Preston Portee and A.J. Porter ran for two touchdowns each for the Bears.
Porter's second touchdown, a 1-yard run with just over four minutes to go, put Southwest Missouri up 28-21, but the Sycamores tied the game on Johnson's run after a 16-play, 72-yard drive in the closing minutes.
Shields rushed for 114 yards and Johnson was 18-of-35 for 229 yards and the one TD pass to Shields.
