HAUTE, IN (2-1-2003) — Tamarr Maclin had 11
points and nine rebounds Saturday for Southwest Missouri State as the Bears
rallied to beat Indiana State 48-44. The Bears (12-6, 8-1 Missouri Valley)
outscored the Sycamores (5-15, 1-8) 7-0 in the last 1:46 to win their sixth
straight game while ISU lost its eighth in a row.
The Sycamores held a 39-31 lead with 7:40 left but the Bears scored the next nine points to lead 40-39. A 2-point basket by Merrill Andrews followed 3-pointers by Tommy Johnson and Terrance McGee and a free throw by Monwell Randle. Johnson's basket at 7:14 was the first for SMS since the 17:04 mark.
Lamar Grimes hit a trey and Marcus Howard scored two of his 10 points to put ISU ahead 44-41 with 2:09 left. McGee's second 3-pointer tied the game and Andrews put SMS ahead to stay 46-44 with 1:06 to play.
Kellen Easley hit two of four free tosses for the final points. The Sycamores held a 23-20 lead at the end of the first half with David Moss having 11 of 19 points for ISU including a layup as the half ended. Indiana State hit 42 percent of its shots in the half and missed its only free throw. The Bears shot just 20 percent, missing their first nine shots, but were good on 8-of-12 free throws.
For the game, ISU had a 20-13 edge in field goals but shot just two free throws and missed them. The Bears were good on 17-of-26 free throws. The Bears shot 27 percent (13-of-49) while ISU made 39 percent (20-of-51).
Indiana State will begin a two-game roadswing on Wednesday at Bradley. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CST. The Braves (7-13, 3-6) are coming off an 89-74 Missouri Valley Conference loss at Illinois State on Feb. 1st.
