Sycamores fall to Central Florida on last-second shot, 50-49

NEW ORLEANS, LA (12-1-2002) The Indiana State men’s basketball team (2-3) narrowly missed winning the 2002 University Hoops Championship as the Central Florida Golden Knights (4-1) hit a last-second buzzer beating layup to claim a 50-49 victory.

Freshman David Moss led all scorers for the second time in the tournament with 14 points, on the strength of his two three-point field goals. Marcus Howard was once again in double figures as he scored 10 to along with an assist and a steal. For his efforts throughout the weekend Howard was named to the all-tournament team.

Indiana State trailed Central Florida by ten (33-23) at the half, but the tough Sycamore defense allowed only 17 points the entire second period. Indiana State led 49-48 with the ball when all of the scoreboard clocks went out with 30.9 seconds remaining. When play resumed the Sycamores failed on the front end of a one-and-one bonus opportunity and UCF took the ball down the court before missing their first shot and hitting a rebounded tip in as time expired.

ISU shot 42.9% from the three-point line (6-14), but were only 3-8 from the foul stripe in the contest, including the miss on the front end of the bonus situation in the closing seconds of the contest. ISU committed a season low seven turnovers in the game.

ISU takes home second place honors in the tournament and will have the chance to get back on the winning track this week, when they host Butler at 7:05 p.m. in the Hulman Center.
