Sycamores lose to Drake, 68-54

DES MOINES, IA (1-18-2003) —  The Indiana State men's basketball team dropped its fourth-consecutive contest on Saturday night to host Drake, 68-54. In the loss, freshman David Moss and sophomore Lamar Grimes led the Sycamores with 18 and 17 points, respectively. The victorious Bulldogs landed three players in double figures, including a game-high 23 points by Greg Danielson and teammates Lonnie Randolph and Luke McDonald chipped in 14 and 11, respectively.

With the loss, the Sycamores fall to 5-11 overall and 1-4 in the MVC; meanwhile, with the win Drake improves to 7-10 overall and 2-4 in the MVC.

Veteran head coach Royce Waltman shuffled his starting lineup for the first starting line-up change since the Murray State game as sophomores Jerod Adler and Grimes receiving the starting nods in place of Wilfred Antoine and Catrel Green.

The host Bulldogs jumped out to a 20-13 advantage with 11:39 remaining in the opening half, but the Sycamores went on a 10-0 run. A jumper by Brian Giesen started the run, followed by a Marcus Howard 3-pointer and Grimes' 10-foot bank shot. Then Green batted a Drake pass to teammate Matt Broermann, and Moss wound up hitting a 3-pointer for a 23-20 Sycamore lead with 6:55 remaining in the opening half. The Bulldogs and the Sycamores would battle for the remainder of the half, but a J.J. Sola lay up with 1:24 left gave host Drake a 30-29 lead into the intermission.

To begin the second half, Grimes hit a layup to give ISU its final lead, 31-30, Drake used Grimes' and Adler's third fouls to trigger an 8-0 run, capped by a wide-open 3-pointer by Drake's Lonnie Randolph. The Bulldogs were up 38-31. ISU managed to tighten the game again, pulling to within 45-43 on two free throws by Moss with 10:49 left to play. But as foul troubles worsened for Green, Grimes, Moss and Adler, Drake took advantage. Four different Bulldogs scored during a 12-0 run. Drake's 57-43 edge was insurmountable.
