Sycamores advance to University Hoops Classic Championship

NEW ORLEANS, LA (11-30-2002) - The Indiana State men’s basketball team (2-2) will compete in the championship of the 2002 University Hoops Classic hosted by Tulane University Sunday at 6 p.m., despite falling to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2-2) in the second round of the tournament today. ISU was led by Brian Giesen and Marcus Howard who recorded 14 points each in the 71-59 loss to Milwaukee.

With the Sycamores 13-point win against SEMO and their 12-point loss today, their point differential for the tournament’s pool play was plus one which tied for the best in the three team pool with Southeast Missouri. However, ISU’s win over SEMO in the first round, gives the Sycamores the nod into Sunday’s championship against the winner of the other pool.

The Sycamores shot an impressive 44.7% from the field and out-rebounded Milwaukee 34-31, but they lost the game committing 20 turnovers and only creating eight steals in the contest. Howard continued his strong play for ISU as he recorded seven rebounds, three assists and four steals to go along with his 14 points.

Indiana State only trailed 35-30 at the half, but Milwaukee was able to put together a run early in the second half that the Sycamores could not overcome in the later stages of the contest.

ISU will compete at approximately 6 p.m., Sunday (Dec. 1) against Central Florida, in the championship of the tournament.
