HAUTE, IN (11-22-2002) - Indiana State used a 17-2 second-half run to
come from behind and defeat Youngstown State, 63-56, Friday night at ISU's
Hulman Center. The contest was the season opener for both teams.
Leading, 32-26 at the half, Youngstown State upped the margin to 10 points at 36-26 on a TeJay Anderson bucket just one minute into the second stanza.
Youngstown State's TeJay Anderson led all scorers with 17 points, while Sycamore guard Marcus Howard had 16 points. Also reaching double-figure scoring for Indiana State was freshman guard David Moss (16 points) and senior center Brian Giesen (11 points). Doug Underwood (13 points) and Adam Baumann (11 points) tallied double figures for the Penguins.
Giesen and Moss led all rebounders with six apiece, while three Penguins contributed five boards.
Indiana State senior Matt Broermann then connected on a three-pointer, then stole the ball from Penguin guard Marlon Williamson and completed the layup to pull the Sycamores within five points at 36-31. Following a Doug Underwood field goal, the Sycamores would then outscore Youngstown State by a 17-2 margin over the next 6:42 to take a 46-42 lead, one they wouldn't relinquish.
The Sycamore forced 23 Youngstown State turnovers, while also making 27 trips to the free throw line. Indiana State committed 18 turnovers, themselves, with 11 coming in the first half.
The Sycamores next contest is Tuesday, November 26, when they travel to Valparaiso. Game time is set for 8:05 p.m. EST.
