Sycamores Drop 76-68 Decision to Ball State

MUNCIE, IN (12-14-2002) A last-minute 11-0 run in the final minutes of the contest was not enough as Indiana State lost to host Ball State on Saturday afternoon, 76-68.

The Sycamores fall to 3-5 with the loss; meanwhile, the Cardinals improve to 5-2 overall. In the loss, Indiana State seniors Marcus Howard and Brian Giesen led three Sycamores in double figures with 13 points. Freshman David Moss recorded his fourth-straight double figure outing as he chipped in with 10 points.

The Cardinals landed three players in double figures with Chris Williams, who was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line and 4-for-9 from the three-point line, scored a game-high 28 in the win. Matt McCollom, who added 17 and Cameron Echols who pumped in 14 points joined him in double figures.

The visiting Sycamores held an early lead in the first half by as much as five until the host Cardinals went on a 13-2 run towards the end of the opening half. Igniting the run for the Cardinals was Williams who hit back-to-back three pointers at the 3:54 mark. The ISU frontline of Giesen and junior Catrel Green combined to score 15 of the Sycamores' 31 points in the opening half. Williams led the Ball State charge with 18 of his own. To close out the opening stanza, ISU freshman Michael Lawson saw his first action as a Sycamore.

With a five-point halftime lead, the Cardinals stretched their lead to 17 with 3:57 left to go in the contest. Over the next three minutes, the Sycamores went on a 11-0 run to reduce the Ball State lead to six points with :58 left in the contest. ISU could not get any closer, as the Cardinals would come away with a 76-68 victory.
