Sycamores Defeat Illinois-Chicago, 73-54

TERRE HAUTE, IN (12-23-2002)  Marcus Howard had a career-high 23 points to lead Indiana State to a 73-54 victory over Illinois-Chicago Monday night.

Howard, a junior from Elgin, Ill., added six rebounds, three assists and two steals to his totals as the Sycamores (4-6) won for the first time in three games and ended the Flames' winning streak at four.

Howard had 15 of his points in the first half, when the Sycamores shot 57 percent from the field and led 36-31 at the break.

The score was tied at 17-17 when Indiana State used a 15-5 run to take a 32-22 lead. The Sycamores scored the first six points of the second half
and outscored Illinois-Chicago (6-3) 17-6 for a 53-47 lead with 12 minutes to play.

Indiana State shot 51 percent for the game and outrebounded the Flames 39-37. Its biggest lead was 21 and Illinois-Chicago got no closer than seven points in the final period. Lamar Grimes had 10 points for the Sycamores, and Wilfred Antoine recorded seven assists and five points.

Aaron Carr scored 13 points for Illinois-Chicago and Armond Williams added 11. Cedrick  Banks, who had averaged 22 points in the four previous games since becoming eligible, scored seven.
