ISU Sycamores face Murray State tonight

Murray, KY - (9-20-2003) — Indiana State travels to Murray, KY, for the final non-conference road matchup of the season against OVC foe Murray State.  In a rematch of one the most exciting games of the 2002 season, the Indiana State Sycamores travel to Murray State following last season’s double overtime thriller against the Racers.  Its just the sixth meeting ever between the two schools, and the Sycamores have lost both of their trips all-time to Murray, Ky., while having never lost to MSU in Terre Haute.

Last season’s game was won by the Sycamores by virtue of a 54-yard field goal by Mike Megyesi that bounded against the right upright and over the crossbar for a 34-31 win in the second extra period.

Today’s game is part of an 11-contest challenge series between the Gateway and Ohio Valley Conferences with the Sycamores’ second game of the challenge to come next week at home against Eastern Illinois. ISU’s last trip to Murray resulted in a 41-24 loss in 2000. Brian Fritz (play-by-play) and Ben Wagner (color commentary) call all of the action live beginning at 5:40 p.m. world wide on the web at www.USA-365.com.

THE SETUP — The Sycamores are 1-2 having defeating 1-AA Florida International at home and falling to 1-A foes Ball State and Indiana on the road. The Racers are also 1-2 coming off a 32-7 loss at the hands of Gateway Conference foe Southern Illinois last weekend.

THE INDIANA STATE COACH — Indiana State head coach Tim McGuire (Nebraska ‘75) is in his sixth season at the helm of the Sycamore football program. His record at ISU stands at 18-41, while his eight-year career mark stands at 25-56, including two seasons as the head coach at Morningside College. This season is McGuire’s 11th as a member of the Sycamores’ coaching staff. McGuire is 2-1 all-time against Murray State.

THE MURRAY STATE COACH — Following in the footsteps of great college head coaches such as Frank Beamer and Mike Gottfried, Murray State head coach Joe Pannunzio is in his fourth season with the Racers and holds an 18-18 record heading into today’s game. He is 1-1 all-time as a head coach against the Sycamores.

THE SERIES — Indiana State leads the series 3-2, having won all three meetings at Terre Haute, while Murray State has taken both of the all-time meetings in Murray.
