Indiana State goes through first preseason practice

TERRE HAUTE, IN - (8/12/2003) —  Indiana State head football coach Tim McGuire led his squad onto the practice field Monday for a spirited two and one half hour practice session in helmets only. The Sycamores spent a significant amount of time on special teams and positional drills.

The focus of the workout was on the middle of the field, where quarterbacks Damien Cunningham, Jake Schiff and Phillip Johnson continued their battle for the starting job. Each continues to get the same look in practice. The speed of the defensive backfield was also impressive as defensive coordinator Tim Burke spent the majority of practice working on defensive work in the passing game.

After the first practice, McGuire has decided to hold two scrimmages before the season opener on August 28th against Ball State. The first one will occur this Saturday, August 16, at 3:00 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium. The final scrimmage will be Thursday August 21, at 7:00 p.m.

ISU is back at it on Tuesday afternoon when they will once again practice in helmets only at 3:00 p.m.
