Sycamores Football Notes: Game 11

Terre Haute, IN (11-9-2002) — The Indiana State Sycamores travel to Carbondale, IL, Saturday, November 9 to face Southern Illinois. Kick-off for the contest, which will be the Gateway Conference TV Game of the Week, is scheduled for 1:07 p.m., CST.

The Records - Indiana State enters the contest at 4-6/2-3 GFC, following last Saturday's 21-19, come-from-behind win over Northern Iowa. The Sycamores, who are a perfect 4-0 at home this season, have nonconference losses against two Div. I-A programs (17-48 at W. Michigan, 21-23 at Ball State), as well as a 19-26 loss at #13 Eastern Illinois.  The Sycamores' victories have come against Cumberland (14-10), Murray State (34-31 2ot) SMS (23-20 ot) and Northern Iowa (21-19). Conference losses have occurred at Western Kentucky (7-24), Western Illinois (21-52) and Youngstown State (16-31).  Southern Illinois brings records of 4-6/2-3 GFC, and rides a three-game losing skid, heading into Saturday's contest.

The Coaches - Indiana State head coach Tim McGuire (Nebraska '75) is in his fifth season at the helm of the Sycamores football program.  McGuire's record as head coach at Indiana State stands at 16 victories and 38 defeats, while his six-year career mark stands at 23-53, including two seasons as the head coach at Morningside College (1981-82).  This season is McGuire's 10th as a member of the Sycamores' coaching staff.  Southern Illinois head coach Jerry Kill (Southwestern '83) is 54-41 in eight years as a head coach and 5-16 in his second season with the Salukis.

The Series - Indiana State leads the Southern Illinois series, 22-17-0.  The Sycamores are riding an eight-game win streak over Southern Illinois and stand 7-11-0 in games played in Carbondale, IL.  Indiana State defeated the Salukis, 20-14, last year in Terre Haute.
