The Indiana State Sycamores come into
today’s contest against Southern Illinois having won the last nine meetings
against the Salukis, but this year ISU rides into the game with their first
winning record since 1998, and SIU comes in 4-0, having easily won their first
four contests and standing at Number 11 in the country.
Indiana State, winners of their last two in a
row, look for win number three on Saturday, the first time they would have won
three in a row since taking five in a row during the 1996 campaign. Indiana
State is coming off a 235-yard passing performance by redshirt freshman Jake
Schiff and a 104-yard, five reception game by freshman Sam Logan, who was named
Gateway Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
THE
SETUP — The
Sycamores and Salukis battle for the 41st time today as Indiana State (3-2) and
Southern Illinois (4-0) open up their 2003 Gateway Football Conference campaigns
within the confines of ISU’s Memorial Stadium.
THE
INDIANA STATE COACH — Indiana
State head coach Tim McGuire (Nebraska ‘75) is in his sixth season at the helm
of the Sycamore football program. His record at ISU stands at 20-41, while his
eight-year career mark stands at 27-56, including two seasons as the head coach
at Morningside College. This season is McGuire’s 11th as a member of the
Sycamores’ coaching staff. McGuire is a perfect 5-0 against Southern Illinois
as a head coach.
THE
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS COACH — Southern
Illinois is coached by Jerry Kill, who is in his third season with the Salukis.
Kill is 9-18 with SIU, having compiled a 58-43 overall head coaching record.
Kill is 0-2 against Southern Illinois.
THE
SERIES — Indiana
State leads the series 23-17-0, having won the last nine meetings over the
Salukis.
INDIANA
STATE CAPTAINS — Captains
for the 2003 season are: TE Ryan King, OL Matt Griebel, CB Clythel Branson and
SS Larry Thompson.
UNCLE
SAM — Sam
Logan, a redshirt freshman, had his biggest day as a collegiate athlete with a
five-catch afternoon in the Sycamores 23-7 win over Eastern Illinois. For his
efforts he was tabbed as the Gateway Football Conference’s Offensive Player of
the Week. Logan caught a 34-yard touchdown strike from fellow redshirt freshman
Jake Schiff to put ISU up 17-0 in the second quarter. The Sycamore receiver
finished the game with 104 yards in receptions as he caught four passes on ISU's
final offensive drive of the game to secure their first win over Eastern
Illinois since 1993. His 104 yards receiving was the first 100+ yard receiving
day for ISU since 1998.
SCHIFF
SUPERB — Redshirt
freshman Jake Schiff was 15 of 26 for 235 yards with a career-long 34-yard
touchdown to Sam Logan in the 23-7 win over Eastern Illinois.
THIRD
AND LONG — Indiana
State’s current nine game winning streak over Southern Illinois is the third
longest all-time winning streak by one Gateway Conference school over another,
and it is the longest current streak in the Gateway.
