CP's Ty Smith (12) and Drew Adzia (14) take the floor just like in the old days at John Wheeler Middle School.
South Bend Washington's Janye Griffin (11) has to deal with both CP defenders David Brown (30) and Daren Roach (24) but the lack of out-of-bounds area at the CP junior high.
CP junior David Brown (30) looks to move against Washington senior DeMarcus Vaughn (23) and John Wheeler Middle school last Saturday night. The game was moved from the high school due to a mechanical malfunction with one of the baskets at CPHS.
CP's Jake Oostman (42) got his first start after scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds the previous night at LaPorte.
The banner at John Wheeler Middle school suggests that all Bulldogs are not created equal. CP middle schools Taft and Wheeler are friendly rivals in the CPHS universe.
CP's Darren Roach (24) puts the evil eye on SBW senior guard Janye Griffin (11). the Bulldogs held Washington to just 23 second half points after SBW held CP to just 23 first half points.
Coach Clint Swan plans a CP comeback after the Bulldogs fell behind by 15 points. CP has fallen behind by 10 or more in the first half against Chesterton, LaPorte and Washington in successive games.
SBW's Jalen Miller (22) and Cortez Redmond (24) put a double screen on CP's Darren Roach and Miles Lubbers (22) to the benefit of senior guard Janye Griffin (11).
CP's Darren Roach (24) looks to bust a move on SBW's Jalen Petty (3). Washington came to CP after topping South Bend rival St. Joseph's 67-60 the previous night.
CP junior Ty Smith scored a game high 23 top lead Crown Point Comeback including 13 in the second half.
CP sisters Abby and Lilly Stoddard took advantage of their end of the season break before the girls state tournament begins Friday night Feb. 7 at Portage.

CROWN POINT (02-01-2020) It was an early February matchup that had to be moved to the middle school. Two one game over .500 nonconference opponents a time zone apart. On a Saturday night. I didn’t have a lot of hope for me liking this game.

Then Crown Point fell behind visiting South Bend Washington by 15 points, 38-23 at the half. I’m not going to lie. I wanted to go home.

But, once again, I under-estimated Indiana basketball. After a rowdy, foul-filled fourth quarter where the home team closed the gap, Washington freshman Marcus Northern blocked CP sophomore Drew Adzia’s potential game-winning shot as time ran out and the Panthers escaped with a 61-59 victory.

“If that shot gets into the air, it probably goes in,” said Washington coach Ryan Varga. “The way our luck has been going. He (Northern) didn’t really have a good game, but he kept his head in the game and he came up huge for us.”

CP’s Ty Smith scored 12 in the fourth quarter and some Bulldog defensive pressure cut a 14-point lead to two as the home town fans, including a small but loud ‘student section’ made enough noise to shake the middle school gym.

“I don’t know if it was the atmosphere or what,” said Washington coach Ryan Varga. “It was a sectional environment. The crowd really got into it. I loved every minute of it. We were fortunate to get out of here with a win.”

“We did a good job executing that last play,” said Swan of the last shot - a half court pass to 6-foot-4 David Brown, who kicked it out to Adzia at the three-point line.

Swan did note that his boys have developed a bad habit of falling behind significantly early in games.

“Third game in a row. We just have to find a way to get ready and come out better,” Swan said. “I was proud of the way we battled back.”

Washington’s three seniors 6-foot-6 Jylen Petty, 6-foot-3 DeMarcus Vaughn and 6-foot-1 guard Janye Griffin scored 34 of the Panthers’ 38 first half points and the Bulldogs, coming off a 68-65 Friday night win at LaPorte, seemed over-matched. Griffin went down with a leg injury in the third quarter but he returned before the end of the period.

“I guess you could call them the ‘Big-3’,” said Varga. “I just call them my three seniors. They all average in double figures. Griffin had a battle with No. 12 (Ty Smith) all night. If we’d have played another three or four minutes, I don’t know if we could have held them off.”

CP’s 6-foot-6 Jake Oostman started for the first time and had six points, four rebounds and three blocked shots in the fourth quarter to spark the CP rally. Oostman had come off the bench the night before in LaPorte to score 14 and grab a season-high 13 rebounds in 22 minutes of play.

DOG NOTES: Crown Point trailed 22-7 at LaPorte Friday night, but they used an 18-0 run to get back in the game and eventually win 68-65 in Duneland Athletic Conference (DAC) play.

Junior Ty Smith scored 20 with five rebounds and four assists and David Brown added 10 points with nine rebounds in a game that was tied 10 times.

The draw for the IHSAA state tournament which will reveal CP’s foe in the six-team Valparaiso Sectional, will be held on February 23.

Washington coach Ryan Varga found out that his team’s game in Crown Point would be played at the middle school about 10 a.m. Saturday.

“At first I was worried about the length of the floor,” he said. “Because we like to run and spread things out. But when I got here I was at ease. Coach Swan put me at ease.”

“We want to play as many well-coached teams as we can and coach Swan’s teams have that reputation. He’s been doing it for so long. Hopefully a little of it will rub off on me.”
